Toyota Camry Hybrid launched in Australia

Toyota has unveiled today the hybrid version of the Toyota Camry Sedan for Australia which is going to enter the Australian market in February 2010. The car was launched at the Altona plant where the official production started today. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.4L petrol engine and also an electric drive which produce together 188 HP, 31 HP more than the stock version of the Camry sedan which had only 157 HP.

The hybrid version of the Camry is expected to have a fuel usage of under 6L/100 km with its electric drive, which is a huge improvement when you compare it to the fuel consumption of the stock version of this car which was 8.8L/100 km. The car features a Hybrid Synergy Drive-oriented instrument cluster design and it will come with full leather trim interior, fog lights and a reversing camera.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid will cost at least AU$3,500 over the regular version of the sedan and the Australian part of Toyota already plans to sell at least 10,000 units every year. Full details about this new hybrid car will be released in the weeks to follow

Toyota Etios Breaking Cover in Delhi, India

Small family cars are a big thing in the Indian market which is slowly but steadily becoming the global hub for such cars. The latest sensation that has its name doing rounds across the country is the small family car Toyota Etios which is slated to compete with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The segment to which it caters is a very competitive one in the Indian market and therefore Toyota has priced the Etios competitively at 4.5 lakh ($10,000).

The Etios is slated for a debut at the New Delhi Auto Expo and the commuter has already been spy photographed prior to that launch. It will be launched both as a sedan and a hatchback variant and will be available for purchase by the end of 2011. India will have the largest production facility for the Etios followed by Brazil and China where the car will be introduced next year.

2010 Dodge Viper at the LA Auto Show

The subtly revised 2010 Dodge Viper ACR, which is set to make its world premiere at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show, has set a new lap record at the Laguna Seca with a time of 1:33.915 as recorded by Motech in-vehicle data recorder (1:33.944” as unofficially recorded by trackside clock) breaking the previous lap record of 1.35.117 set by a Devon GTX this past August. The 2010 Dodge Viper ACR was piloted by SRT vehicle dynamics engineer, Chris Winkler.

“It was definitely exciting but a somewhat uneventful lap overall from behind the steering wheel,” said Winkler. “The Dodge Viper ACR has amazing power and handles like a dream, so following my first practice here last month, I came away pretty confident that we’d be able to set a new record.”

In the final year of the Viper’s production, the hardcore ACR, (first introduced in 2008), receives a series of upgrades including a shorter fifth gear ratio that changes from 0.74 to 0.80 for improved high-speed acceleration and higher straightaway speed, a new short-throw shifter and a redesigned rear wing to further optimize aerodynamics and improve rear yaw downforce.

Dodge says that these improvements result in an increase in top speed of 4 mph, to 184 mph (296 km/h) for the 2010 model.

There are no other changes for the Viper ACR that is powered by an 8.4-liter V10 engine with 600 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. of torque, for a 0-60 mph (96km/h) acceleration in under 4 seconds, quarter-mile time in the mid 11-second range and 0-100-0 mph in 11 seconds flat.

Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand and Senior Vice President, Product Design Office, Chrysler Group LLC, said that the company plans to release several special edition models during the last year of the Viper including a Laguna Seca edition to commemorate the record lap. All in all, around 500 Vipers will be produced in 2010.

2011 Hyundai Tucson Priced at $18,995

Hyundai announced today that the front-wheel-drive 2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS model will come in at $18,995 ($19,490 with the $795 destination charge included) with the standard 176-horsepower, 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission.

Add the new six-speed automatic and the price of the GLS goes up to $20,790 with destination. The redesigned Tucson goes on sale in GLS and Limited trim levels next month.

Adding all-wheel drive ($1,500) requires both the six-speed automatic and the $1,700 Popular Equiment package (17-inch wheels, telescoping wheel, leatherette upholstery, cruise control and Bluetooth) and, in all, takes your 2011 Tucson GLS up to $23,990. Splurge on a navigation system with rearview camera ($2,000) and you're up to $25,990.

Limited models have 18-inch wheels, the six-speed automatic and leather upholstery as standard, and start at $25,140. For another $2,850, you can have the Premium package with the nav system and a panoramic sunroof. So an AWD Tucson Limited Premium costs $29,490.

For now, the 2.4-liter engine will be the only power plant, but for the 2011 model year, a more efficient 2.0-liter engine will be added in the a fuel economy-minded Tucson Blue model. And later on in the model cycle, you can expect that engine to get the direct-injection technology that debuts on the 2011 Sonata.

These improvements were accomplished while lowering the overall height of the vehicle. The Tucson now has more passenger volume than Rogue and Escape at 101.9 cubic feet. Tucson’s cargo capacity is 13 percent greater than its predecessor. In fact, Tucson has more interior volume than Acura RDX, and more cargo volume than Infiniti FX. Chevrolet Cruze: First Drive

Just one look at the Cruze and you will be taken in by its good looks, taunt stance and size. The large rakish headlights, wide grill and sculpted bumper give the car a menacingly handsome fascia. GM is definitely taking styling very seriously and considering the fact that the Cruze is set to have a global presence, this fact is all the more important for the first step towards acceptance is that customers worldwide should admire the way the car looks.

With such focus on style, GM didn't just stop at the front. When viewed from the side, the sporty overtone carries over for the car has a nicely curved roofline that merges well with the rather steeply raked rear
windscreen. It's a rather European look and feel that this car possesses, except from the rear. The rear of the Cruze screams 'Honda Civic'. Literally, the rear lights just look like inverted Civic lights a fact that was confirmed by onlookers who asked me if I happen to be driving the new Civic. Of course they were completely oblivious to the bow-tie on the rear, but it does prove my point.

Nevertheless, the Cruze oozes with style and complimenting the entire package are the nice large 16 inch alloys wrapped in tubeless 205/60 JK Vectra rubber. To sum the exterior styling, I would say the Cruze is a combination of American Muscle Car and European Sedan with a dash of Japanese essence thrown in! What you get is a marriage of parts that work to give you a stunning car that would even look good in racing stripes.

Getting into the Cruze is also an experience for you don't need the keys to open the door! That's right, the Cruze comes with sensors on the door, so just as long as you have the keys in your pocket the door will pop right open when you pull on the handle. While on the subject of doors, it is rather simple to lock as well, for all you have to do is give the handle a gentle pull and the doors will lock. Anyways, back to the interiors of the car

Once inside you will notice the sporty-muscle tone carried over here as well. It's a bit too much plastic at parts and the fit and finish could have been better but the overall look is rather striking for you almost feel as though you are in a cockpit. The large steering wheel with cruise control and stereo controls has a nice feel to it, the dials boast of a three-pod look that might have come straight out of a classic Chevy car-chrome and all! The center console however had me thinking 'Transformers'. Starting from the LED display to the controls of the in dash stereo and CD player down to the controls for the A/C and climate control and flanked by the center two A/C vents on the dash, the entire look was rather like the Transformers logo- a good thing considering the fact that GM is the official provider of cars for the Transformers movie franchise

M could have really done wonders with the interiors for they are well designed, its just that they are poorly put together at places. Apart from the plastic cubby holes in the doors the one little box on top of the dashboard spoils the party for it just doesn't sit right and has gaping gaps when shut. Another element that caught my eye as tacky was the sunglass holder. Placed uniquely towards the right side of the driver's head, the quality of the holder was really sub standard.

In terms of space, the Cruze is rather decent and offers ample room for the front passengers. Rear passengers also get enough leg room however head room is at a premium thanks to the steeply raked rear glass and downward flowing roofline.
A neat yet rather awesome surprise is thrown at you when you want to get the car moving. There is no key hole for the ignition! Instead you get a rather neat start/stop button towards the left of the steering column on the dash. A gentle push of the button, provided you have the clutch pressed and the 2.0 VCDi Diesel engine roars to life. Alright, you really can't hear it roar thanks to all the insulation, but the car does come to life. The instrument cluster takes on a neat blue glow which fits in well with the sporty tone and as you notch it into first gear to drive away you finally realize why this car is called the Cruze!

Toyota FT-86 Concept to be displayed at Auto Expo?

Sources tell us Toyota might display the FT-86 along with 13 others cars at the Auto Expo next month. The FT-86 is inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe of the ’80s. The concept was designed by Toyota’s ED2 styling studio in France and bears a close resemblance to the FT-HS concept exhibited at the Detroit Auto Show few years back.

The FT-86 could be powered by a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter engine sending 200+hp power to the rear wheels. Toyota could price it around USD 25-30k, so don’t expect the FT-86 CBU to come at less that 25 lakh rupees in India, if Toyota sanctions it

New Hyundai Tucson/ix35 coming to 2010 Auto Expo?

A popular business channel on Indian television suggests Hyundai will display the new Tucson/ix35 at next year’s Auto Expo. Hyundai offered the first generation Tucson in India with 2.0-liter engine, but with little success. Around the world, the Tucson is thought of as a hugely successful SUV selling in millions.

Hyundai is coming with cars like the Genesis Coupe to the Expo, which are meant to be show cars. The Tucson could also be such an exhibit, but its absence in the SUV market for such a long period raises doubts on its introduction.

Hyundai would have learnt quite a few lessons selling the Tucson. Would they hand the Tucson another chance here in India? Or should I put it this way – Will the Indian customer give Tucson, the latest generation which has everything going for it, another chance to make a mark?

The 2010 Yamaha R1 represents a paradigm shift in technology, performance and controllability among litre class sport bikes. The R1 has been designed to be the “Ultimate Cornering Master 1000” of the open super sport class. Royal Enfield for the first time is displaying its new Woodsman EFI and Lewis Leathers limited edition at the NEC show.

The Woodsman goes back to the year 1955 when Royal Enfield produced this kind of a model for the first time for its USA importer. This model had high-level exhaust and high bars badged as the Indian Woodsman.
The limited edition Royal Enfield shown here is based on the Classic 500 which has latest technology like Fuel injection and electric start but to make it a Woodsman model the company will give the legendary touch by providing it with the same set of higher bars and exhaust pipe as they were present on the 1955 Woodsman.
Apart from this, the bike would include new additions like alloy bash plate, rearset footrests, a single seat and a luggage rack.

This limited edition Bullet Classic was co-designed by renowned fashion photographer Nick Clements who also happens to be a fan of vintage styles, and British leathers manufacturer Lewis Leathers. The bike comes up with some unique paint scheme, double toned leather seat cover and saddle bags made of leather.
The bike will be launched early next year at a cost of £4699. We never said it was cheap.

Tata is coming up with better products of late. After the announcementof its high-profile Nano, Tata has also launched improved versions of earlier launched cars Sumo Grande and Indica Vista. Now the car

company is planning to come up with Tata Indicruz. This car is actually Tata Xover concept car that was earlier showcased at 75th Geneva Motorshow in 2005. Indicruz has some design changes compared to Xover. It has high roof ensuring more passenger space compared to the latter's sleek roofline. Indicruz has also got embedded lights.

Tata Indicruz is likely to be around 4.85-meter long, will use a rugged frame-based design with large interior space and seating for upto 7 adults and will have ample cargo area. It is also likely to have traction control, climate control with personalized zones, navigation system, airbags for driver & passenger, anti-lock braking system and other safety options. After its launch, Indicruz will compete against Toyota Innova. This 7-seater likely have the latest 2.2 liter Dicor engine, navigation system, ABS and air bags among and classy interiors. The car will be roomy with lots of storage space inside.

Peugeot to Unveil 308CC Coupe at Paris Auto Show

Peugeot will unveil the successor to the 307CC, the 308CC coupe at the Paris Auto Show in October.

The Peugeot 308CC will be built at PSA's plant in Sochaux, Eastern France.

The 308CC coupe will be offered with a 150hp, 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine or a 140hp 2.0-liter 140hp turbocharged diesel.

The 308 CC, with its four full-size seats, capitalizes on all the inbuilt strengths of the 308 range whilst still embodying the “307 CC spirit” and Peugeot’s coupe cabriolet expertise. Above all, it promises enthusiasts of “lifestyle” motoring a unique and genuinely attractive offer.

The 308 CC stands out due to its elegant and stylish design, both in its coupe and cabriolet configurations. A low sporty profile confirms the dynamic potential of the 308 CC and the prominent shape and LED rear lights create a unique signature for the car by day and by night.

The passenger compartment has an undeniable personality. Particularly striking in the “cabriolet” version, it has a different feel from the hatchback and creates the impression of a grand touring car.

Saab has launched its new 9-5 flagship, a model vital to the brand's success as an independent automaker.

The new 9-5 will play an important role in a product offensive that Koenigsegg plans to announce once its purchase of the brand from GM is finalized.

The current 9-5 was originally launched in 1997, so its replacement is long overdue. The new Saab 9-5 It will get its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

As our pictures show, the new 9-5 has a clean, sculpted shape embraces the purity of Scandinavian design. With styling inspired by the award-winning Aero X concept car and a muscular, low-slung stance, the new 9-5 heralds the introduction of a bold and expressive design language.

The all-turbo powertrain line-up is the broadest ever offered by Saab, carrying forward Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy focusing on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient four cylinder turbo engines.

Saab has some 30 years experience in turbocharging engines and the all-turbo powertrain line-up in the new 9-5 further develops its rightsizing engine strategy. At launch, the four-cylinder diesel comprises a 160 hp, 2.0-liter turbo engine with CO2 emissions of just 139g/km and the 2.0-liter petrol turbo engine develops 220bhp. A top-of-the-line 2.8 V6 turbo, generating 300hp and 400Nm of torque, is offered exclusively with Saab XWD.

Shortly after launch, a 1.6-liter petrol turbo with 180hp will be introduced, together with a 2.0-liter BioPower E85 engine. All transmissions will be six-speed.

High-tech kit
The array of high-tech features on offer includes: an aircraft-inspired head-up information display (HUD); adaptive headlights (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam); adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; keyless entry and starting; dual-zone climate control; dynamic parking assistance, and Saab XWD with eLSD: the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system.

Entertainment options include a Harman Kardon audio system, a touchscreen satellite-navigation system with eight-inch screen and hard disk storage for 10GB of MP3 music files. A rear-seat entertainment pack with separate controls and wireless headphones will also be available.

More details will be available when the new 9-5 makes its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

IIHS Announces 2010 Top Safety Picks

Only nineteen cars and eight SUVs this year meet the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's new, tougher standards, earning Top Safety Pick award for 2010.
Last year, cars, trucks and SUVs had to get top crash test marks for front and side impacts as well as for rear-impact whiplash protection. Plus they had to have electronic stability control, a computerized system that helps the driver maintain control during abrupt maneuvers or on slippery roads.

This year, the Insurance Institute added a requirement for roof crush safety to protect occupants in the event of a rollover. To test roof strength, the Institute presses a metal bar against one side of the vehicle's roof. To earn a good rating, the roof must withstand 4 times the vehicle's weight while crushing less than five inches.

This is the second time the Institute has tightened criteria since announcing the first recipients in 2005.

Subaru was the only manufacturer with a winner in all 4 vehicle classes in which it competes. This automaker earns 5 awards for 2010. Ford and subsidiary Volvo have 6 winners, and Volkswagen/Audi has 5. Chrysler earns 4 awards, continuing a recent trend of improving the crashworthiness of its vehicles.

Cars from the largest automakers, however, were noticeably absent. A news release issued by the Insurance Institute noted that while Toyota and its Lexus and Scion subsidiaries did well in 2009 with 11 award winners, they were completely shut out this year.

And the new Honda Accord didn't measure up in terms of roof strength ratings after two years of being named a Top Safety Pick. The Ford Fusion, the institute noted, was dropped from the list for the same reason.

The popular Toyota Camry would have earned a Top Safety Pick spot, according to the institute, if its seats and head restraints, which protect against whiplash, had rated good instead of marginal.

All-New BMW 5 Series Sedan

BMW has unveiled the all-new 5 Series Sedan, the sixth generation of its second biggest seller with overall sales of more than 5.5 million units since 1972.

With the longest wheelbase in the segment, a long and sleek hood, short overhangs, and a coupe-like roofline, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan stands out clearly from the competition. Overall, the aesthetic looks of the car are achieved through balanced proportions. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward, in the stylish and elegant side view of the car, and at the muscular rear end.

Highly advanced drivetrain and suspension technologies combine agile handling for the driver and a high standard of riding comfort for passengers. When equipped with the Sport Package, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan includes Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle's wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

Engines and transmissions

The new 5-series powertrains maintain BMW’s trick of delivering class-leading pace with impressive fuel economy and low CO2 output, grouped under Efficient Dynamics.

The biggest-selling Europe model is likely to be the 135 kW/184 hp 2.0-liter, four-cylinder diesel, which delivers a 0-62 mph time of 8.1sec and a 141mph top speed. It offers combined fuel consumption of just 5.0 litres/100 kilometers (47 mpg US or 56.5mpg UK), while emitting just 132g/km of CO2.

Above that are two models powered by the same 2993cc straight-six diesel: the 150 kW/204 hp 525d and the 180 kW/245 hp 530d. The more powerful of these sprints from 0-62mph in just 6.3sec, while emitting 166g/km of CO2 and returning 6.3 liters/100 kilometers (37 mpg US or 44.8.mpg UK).

In the new BMW 525d, the all-aluminium diesel develops maximum output of 150 kW/204 hp at 4,000 rpm, while maximum torque increased to 450N·m/332 lb-ft is maintained consistently between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. The engine accelerates the new BMW 525d from zero to 62mph in 7.2 seconds and gives the car a top speed of 236 km/h or 146 mph. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 6.2 liters/100 kilometers (38 mpg US or 45.56mpg UK) with a CO2 emission rating of 162 grams per kilometer.

The four gasoline engines comprise two naturally aspirated straight sixes (201hp 523i and 254hp 528i), a single-turbocharged straight six (302hp 535i) and the 401hp, twin-turbo V8 550i.

Even the slowest of these takes just 7.9sec for a 0-62mph sprint and gets within a whisker of 150mph flat out. The 550i SE, with peak torque of 448lb ft, can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.0sec. It returns 10.38 liters/100 kilometers (22.64mpg US or 27.2mpg UK) and emits 243g/km of CO2.

BMW’s eight-speed auto gearbox will be available as on option on all models (it offers lower CO2 emissions than the manual on the 525d) and as standard on the 550i; a six-speed manual is standard on all other cars, as is stop-start.

The driver assistance systems offered for the first time in the context of BMW ConnectedDrive include a Parking Assistant, Surround View, collision warning with application of the brakes in conjunction with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go, and a new Speed Limit Device. Further features also available are Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, a Head-Up Display, BMW Night Vision with detection of individual persons, and a back-up camera.

The world debut of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan opens up the latest chapter in a truly impressive story of success. In the course of five model generations, overall sales of the BMW 5 Series already amount to more than 5.5 million units. Now the new model is based on a newly developed vehicle architecture also featured in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans.

Joint production of the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the BMW 7 Series at BMW Plant Dingolfing, together with the extensive use of shared components, ensures highly efficient production with a supreme standard of quality following the most demanding benchmarks in the market.

2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is the world's first fuel-saving hybrid applied to a large luxury SUV. Powered by an innovative, fuel-saving 2-Mode Hybrid system, Escalade Hybrid should deliver more than a 50-percent improvement in fuel economy in city driving – all while delivering the same distinctive style, segment-leading features and full-size capability that have made the Escalade an icon.

"Escalade, already the sales and style leader among large luxury SUVs, now adds the desirability of a fuel-saving, technically advanced hybrid system," said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. "The arrival of Escalade Hybrid means that consumers can now use less fossil fuel, reduce emissions and still enjoy the benefits of a full-size luxury SUV."

The Hybrid goes on sale in the summer of 2008 and is the newest example of Escalade's technology leadership.

"No other manufacturer offers a hybrid than can seat eight luxuriously while simultaneously carrying or trailering lots of cargo comfortably," Taylor said. "And no hybrid delivers the dramatic presence that is synonymous with Escalade."

Escalade Hybrid is available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. It delivers up to 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg) of usable towing capacity on 2WD models and 5,700 pounds (2,565 kg) on 4WD models. All of Escalade's standard comfort and convenience features are included. This includes an eight-inch, touch-screen navigation system that displays performance readouts of the 2-Mode Hybrid system on the screen.

Escalade Hybrid extends Cadillac's leadership in the large luxury SUV category. Escalade sales have grown in the face of changing sales trends and increased competition. In fact, Escalade sales increased 22 percent in September over year-ago sales. Other models in the Escalade lineup include the extended-length Escalade ESV and the versatile Escalade EXT luxury-utility truck. The Hybrid model is available with the standard Escalade body style.

Patented 2-Mode Hybrid technology

The Escalade's 2-Mode Hybrid system allows it to return exceptional fuel economy in both city and highway while delivering the capabilities of a true luxury SUV. In city driving, this advanced hybrid power system enables Escalade to launch and drive low speeds on electricity alone. As additional power is demanded, the system blends output from the battery and gas engine smoothly.

GM's patented 2-Mode Hybrid system consists of an advanced electrically variable transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). These systems work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 Gen IV gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late-intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. AFM enables the V-8 engine to seamlessly shut off half of its cylinders when less power is needed, such as during highway cruising. This new hybrid system not only enables the Escalade Hybrid to drive low speeds on electricity alone, it also allows the 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical four-cylinder mode for longer periods.

The key to Escalade's 2-Mode hybrid system is that the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed.

The 2-Mode Hybrid system provides seamless, dependable power on demand in an efficient package. In fact, its electric motor is less than half the size of those in single-mode hybrid systems. This technology was developed and is still used in fleets of hybrid transit buses on the streets today in dozens of major North American cities. Scaled-down for use in full-size SUVs, the 2-Mode system delivers fuel savings where it is needed most – in large vehicles with high levels of capability. It is a core part of GM's energy diversity efforts, which are centered on reducing dependence on petroleum, improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and minimizing the automobile's impact on the environment.

Cadillac's smooth and quiet power

Acoustic details specific to the Hybrid model ensure it delivers the superior luxury that has been an Escalade hallmark since its inception. The details include:

• A new exhaust system and resonator specially tuned for the 6.0L LIVC engine's Active Fuel Management operation. It ensures comfortable interior acoustics and a pleasant exhaust note during both V-4 and V-8 operation

• An electrically driven, 300-volt air conditioning compressor reduces vibration and allows the HVAC system to cool the passenger compartment even when the gasoline engine is shut off. It includes the standard tri-zone climate system

• An electrically driven, 42-volt variable-assist power steering reduces vibration and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fuel economy improvement by reducing parasitic losses common in belt-driven hydraulic systems

• The Energy Storage System cooling system's internal fan is tuned to be quiet at low vehicle speeds, when the fan could more easily be heard by the occupants.

Escalade aesthetic

The Escalade Hybrid retains the qualities that have made it the leading large luxury SUV and a standard-bearer of Cadillac's overall product renaissance. It is instantly identifiable as a Cadillac and incorporates styling cues from the landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents.

The Escalade's warm and inviting interior features a premium layout. It is available in two colors, Ebony and Cashmere. Citroen will launch a new, all-electric city car called the C-Zero

Citroen will launch a new, all-electric city car called the C-Zero in in the second half of 2010.

The C-Zero is Citroen’s version of the Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV, which was launched in Japan in June. Peugeot has already shown off its version of the iMiEV, the iOn.

In September this year, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi signed a deal to develop electric cars for both Peugeot and Citroen based on the i-MiEV.

The Citroen C-Zero is a electric car powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 47kW or 64bhp EEC from 3,000 to 6,000rpm. Maximum torque of 180Nm is available from 0 to 2,000rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a single-speed reduction gear.

The C-Zero offers a top speed of 130kph (80mph) and can accelerate from 0 to 100kph (0-62mph) in 15 seconds and from 60 to 90kph (37-56mph) in six seconds.

The motor is powered by a latest-generation 330-volt lithium-ion battery system comprising 88 50Ah cells (for onboard energy of 16kWh), mounted in the centre of the vehicle. Lithium-ion technology keeps battery weight down compared with conventional technology, while offering equivalent performance. It is also resistant to partial re-charges, which have no impact on battery longevity.

A full recharge of the C-Zero takes six hours by plugging the car into a conventional 220-volt socket, but an 80% charge can be achieved in just 30 minutes when using a 400-volt fast-charge station.

A four-seater, it has comfort and safety equipment including power steering, ABS, ESP, electric windows, six airbags and air conditioning.

2010 will also see Citroen roll out stop-start functions in many products, and it will independently launch a full hybrid car, badged DS5, in 2011.

2008 Paris Motor Show: Citroen Hypnos Hybrid SUV

Citroen has unveiled the Hypnos Hybrid Concept SUV at the prestigious Paris Motor Show.

The Hypnos Concept is a disel hybrid SUV that is trying to compete with the likes of the BMW X6 as well as the Infiniti FX models.

Hypnos is powered by Citroen’s all-new hybrid drivetrain, HYmotion4, marrying dynamic performance with solid green credentials to give 60+mpg economy despite its 200 horsepower.

Eye-catchingly proportioned at 4.90m long, 2.17m wide and 1.58m high, Hypnos’s exterior design is characterized by a tautly drawn bonnet line, raised waistline and pronounced wheel arches that house generous 22-inch wheels - a hint at the concept’s sophisticated muscle power.

Hypnos confirms Citroen’s respect for the environment with its all-new HYmotion4 diesel hybrid drivetrain. The 4-wheel drive system combines a powerful 200bhp 2.0 HDi DPFS engine and an intelligent 6-speed EGS (Electronic Gearbox System). With the engine driving the front wheels and an axle-mounted electric motor driving the rear wheels, this simple but effective solution shows a possible way ahead for affordable hybrid technology, in line with Citroen thinking.

Capable of a 0-60mph time of around 9-seconds and silent, exhaust-free driving in ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) mode, the Hypnos’s efficient system delivers dynamic green performance and driving pleasure with impressive fuel economy of almost 63mpg on the combined cycle and low CO2 emissions at just 120g/km.

The four morphologically-sculpted seats are made up of prism-shaped components and can be inflated and deflated to give occupants upper and lower back massages. The body-hugging seats are positioned either side of a unique central console offering occupants an astonishing amount of personal space, and arranged in a helix configuration that inspires images of a DNA strand – reflecting the Hypnos’ design focus on human values.

Passengers can also customize their own space using the pivotal blades of the central helix-shaped console, which includes a range of controls such as the air-conditioning settings.

Hypnos showcases Citroen’s commitment to making technology more accessible and interactive with a raft of innovative features throughout the cabin including color therapy for passengers.

The driver’s instrument cluster is seen through diamond-like prisms, mounted in metal, with each facet displaying different information. A touch screen is also incorporated into the middle of the console, and air-vents gently diffuse halos of ambient light which varies according to temperature.

A ceiling-mounted camera films the driver’s face and regularly measures anthropometric data to gauge emotions and automatically adjusts the cabin lighting and fragrance accordingly for a more bespoke relaxing experience behind the wheel.

Hypnos also features a strikingly original onboard clock designed by the artist Michel Serviteur. The innovative timepiece, which has no needles or digital display, changes color depending on the light at different times of the day and emits a succession of rhythmic color pulses like a breathing organism.

Daimler Starts smart fortwo electric drive Production

Daimler AG started production of the smart fortwo electric drive at the smart plant in Hambach, France.

In a first step, 1,000 vehicles will be provided to customers participating in various mobility projects in major cities in Europe and the U.S., in order to generate broad feedback on electric driving under everyday conditions.

The second-generation smart fortwo electric drive started now is equipped with the most modern lithium-ion-battery.

As of 2012, the smart fortwo electric drive will be produced as a regular part of the smart product portfolio and will regularly be sold through the smart sales network.

The smart brand has taken a pioneering role in electric mobility since 2007. Back then, 100 smart fortwo electric drives of the first generation went into practical customer operation under everyday conditions of city traffic in London. Feedback from this project has been very positive right from the start and confirmed the high degree of maturity of this vehicle concept.

Just one year later, the company introduced the second generation - which is now being produced - with an even more advanced electric drive and an innovative, highly efficient lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion technology has decisive advantages over other types of batteries including higher performance, shorter charging times, a long life and high reliability. In addition, a smart fortwo electric drive can be charged at a regular household power outlet.

The smart plant in Hambach was inaugurated in 1997. Since 1998, it has produced the smart fortwo, since 2007 in its current generation. In 2008, more than 800 employees of the plant and some further 800 people employed by seven system partners produced about 140,000 units of the smart fortwo. In September 2008, the brand celebrated its tenth anniversary along with the 1-millionth smart fortwo produced at the Hambach plant.

The Hambach plant has represented an innovative production concept since its beginning: The assembly line in the shape of a plus sign has been designed to optimally meet the demands of assembly and logistics and ensures highly efficient production processes. This principle enables the system partners to supply modules directly to the assembly line, which reduces transport and logistics efforts to a minimum and hereby also provides an advantage regarding ecological aspects. In addition, the environmentally friendly and cost effective paint shop, an energy concept with numerous savings opportunities and the construction principle of the vehicles ensure that the ecological product responsibility of the smart brand is translated into the production.

Citroen to Launch C-Zero Electric Car in 2010

Citroen will launch a new, all-electric city car called the C-Zero in in the second half of 2010.

The C-Zero is Citroen’s version of the Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV, which was launched in Japan in June. Peugeot has already shown off its version of the iMiEV, the iOn.

In September this year, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi signed a deal to develop electric cars for both Peugeot and Citroen based on the i-MiEV.

The Citroen C-Zero is a electric car powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 47kW or 64bhp EEC from 3,000 to 6,000rpm. Maximum torque of 180Nm is available from 0 to 2,000rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a single-speed reduction gear.

Mercedes-Benz ML450 HYBRID SUV

Mercedes-Benz announced today that on Nov. 16 it will launch the ML450 HYBRID SUV, first European full hybrid vehicle to be offered in the US.

The ML450 HYBRID joins Mercedes-Benz’s existing lineup of fuel-efficient and environmentally compatible vehicles that includes the S400 HYBRID and the BlueTEC diesel models.

The new ML450 HYBRID will be offered as part of a special lease only option (no purchase) for a monthly lease price of $659 per month for 36 months and $549 per month for 60 months.

Featuring V8-like power with four-cylinder fuel economy, the ML450 HYBRID comes with two electric motors and a 275-hp V6 gasoline engine that work together to provide impressive hybrid power with fuel economy estimated at 21 miles per gallon around town and 24 mpg on the highway.

The new Mercedes-Benz ML450 HYBRID uses a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, two magneto-electric motors and sophisticated hybrid electronics to produce more than 46 percent better fuel economy than a comparable V8-powered ML550 model.

Integrated within the modified automatic transmission, each electric motor serves a specific purpose. Dedicated to pulling away under electric power, the motor on the transmission output shaft generates 80 hp and 192 lb.-ft of torque. Located closer to the gasoline engine, the other electric motor is set up specifically for acceleration and is rated at 83 hp and 173 lb.-ft of torque. Working with both electric motors when full power is needed, the gasoline engine develops 275 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.

The electric motors are powered by a liquid-cooled, 288-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery that’s hidden under the rear cargo floor. A powerful computer controls the hybrid system, recalculating the best operating mode 160 times a second. Capable of up to 50 million calculations per second, the system works to maintain an ideal balance between fuel economy and performance.

During parking and low-speed operation, the ML450 HYBRID runs on the electric drive only. On hard acceleration, the gasoline engine is started automatically, and it works seamlessly with the two electric motors for surprisingly good performance. The hybrid system includes a convenient start-stop function that turns off the gasoline engine – for example, when coasting up to a red light – and re-starts it during acceleration. When the ML450 HYBRID is at a traffic light, for example, the gasoline engine is off, but the AC compressor and steering pump are operated electrically, so air conditioning and power steering are fully operational.

During braking, the electric motor acts as a generator, slowing the SUV and recovering kinetic energy. Under heavy braking, the vehicle’s conventional brakes also come into play. Recovered energy is stored in the battery and re-used whenever the car runs only on the electric motors.

Mercedes-Benz engineers optimized the 3.5-liter V6 engine for good fuel economy by taking advantage of the Atkinson principle. By delaying the closing of each intake valve, the intake stroke effectively becomes longer than the compression stroke, increasing thermal efficiency, which reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Although Atkinson engines inherently produce less low-speed torque and throttle response, they are ideal for hybrid vehicles because the electric motors compensate for this disadvantage by working with the V6 to provide excellent throttle response on acceleration. The Atkinson-cycle V6 engine has different cylinder heads, pistons and camshafts as well as modified variable valve timing control and a low-load oil pump for good fuel economy.

The ML450 HYBRID fulfills the same crash test requirements and offers outstanding active safety with stability control systems such as ESP, ABS and BAS, as well as 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The integration of the hybrid technology has been engineered to require no additional packaging space that would compromise comfort or functionality. The space available in the passenger cabin is as generous as before and the trunk capacity remains fully intact. From the outside, the ML450 HYBRID is recognizable by its modified hood, the BlueEFFICIENCY logo on the fender and by the HYBRID badge on its tailgate.

Frankfurt 2009: Renault Four Electric Vehicles

Renault generated quite a buzz at the opening of this year’s Frankfurt motor show, with the unveiling of an unprecedented four electric vehicle concepts, as well as releasing further details on the future infrastructure and technology behind them.

All Renault’s concept cars on show in Germany preview its electric vehicle range which will be released from 2011 and cater for a wide variety of different customers and uses.

In summary, the Renault electric vehicle highlights for the show are:

- Twizy Z.E. Concept: pearlescent white ultra-compact and nimble 1+1 zero-emission city car, with 15kW motor (20hp) and footprint barely larger than a scooter (2.3m long, 1.13m wide and turning circle of 3m). It has a top speed of 47mph, with acceleration comparable to 125cc motorbike

- Zoe Z.E. Concept: compact, four-seat supermini for short daily journeys in urban areas. Scissor doors at the front and butterfly doors at the rear, with polyurethane gel for front and rear of car to underline its hi-tech feel and protect components against minor knocks in town. Features 70kW motor for 100 mile range, 21” alloy wheels and retractable rear spoiler for greater aerodynamic efficiency. Comes complete with personalisable avatar for driving information, mood lighting and futuristic 'hydrate, detox and active scent' climate control

- Fluence Z.E. Concept: electric version of all-new, elegant five-seat Fluence saloon with range of 100 miles for family driving, ahead of production for Israeli market with Project Better Place. Boasts low-rolling resistance Michelin tyres and Samsung Jet phones

- Kangoo Z.E. Concept: previews electric van for fleet and commercial use with 70kW electric motor, solar roof panels and even a heated steering wheel

- ‘Quickdrop’: three distinct vehicle charging methods, of which this is one. Rapid exchange stations replace batteries within three minutes

In line with the values championed by the Renault brand, its electric vehicles will offer customers a spacious interior, comfort, quality and safety. They will also feature a distinctive design signature.

Electric vehicles represent the clean-break solution which can put zero-emission mobility within everyone's reach. In line with the brand's Renault eco² environmental policy, Renault Z.E. electric vehicles are poised to be marketed on a large scale to take a decisive stand on the environment.

Renault begins marketing affordable production electric vehicles in 2011, with the Renault-Nissan Alliance targeting number one status mass-market zero-emission vehicle sales.

Renault Twizy Z.E. Concept
Wraparound bodywork creates a safe, reassuring cocoon which offers first-class protection for both driver and passenger. Power comes from a 15kW electric motor which develops 70Nm of torque, making Twizy Z.E. Concept versatile and easy to drive. Acceleration in urban and suburban traffic is comparable to that of a 125cc motorbike.

The second showcar, Zoe Z.E. Concept, is evidence that an all-electric zero-emission vehicle can also boast smart, appealing looks. Its special roof optimises the management of the climate control system to ensure extended range, while the ambience inside the cabin can be customised. Over and above its traditional role, the climate control system breaks new ground thanks to its 'hydrating', 'detox' and 'active scent' functions which combine to enhance travel. Zoe Z.E. Concept is a compact, versatile car for daily use, which represents a new form of transport thanks to the option of three battery-charging techniques.

The third all-new´concept at Frankfurt, Fluence Z.E. Concept, is a statement of Renault's intent to produce a range of zero-emission vehicles that meets the needs of all types of motorists. A genuine four-door family car with attractive styling, comfort and space, it proves that such features can go hand in hand with respect for the environment.

Renault Fluence Z.E. Concept

Fluence Z.E. Concept is an all-electric car with a range of 100 miles. The battery can be charged using one of three methods: a standard charge (between four and eight hours), a quick charge (20 minutes) or an immediate solution (three minutes) which takes the form of the exclusive 'Quickdrop' rapid battery exchange system. The saloon concept previews the forthcoming electric version of Fluence and represents a solution to zero-emission motoring in the world of tomorrow.

Renault Kangoo Z.E. Concept

Kangoo Z.E. Concept is based on the Kangoo and brings zero-emission mobility to the professional road-user. Powered by a 70kW electric motor, delivering 226Nm of torque, in conjunction with a lithium-ion battery, its energy consumption is minimised thanks not only to the careful attention that has been paid to its overall design, but also to energy optimisation, without impacting the high standard of comfort. Kangoo Z.E. Concept's many information functions make it a particularly user-friendly, efficient and interactive vehicle.

In addition to the four concept cars on show, Renault also chose Frankfurt to unveil its exclusive 'Quickdrop' battery exchange system, as well as further details on the two other battery power solutions.

There will be three options to re-fuel Renault’s zero-emission vehicles:

- Standard charge: takes between four and eight hours, via a charging socket situated on the outside of the vehicle.

- Quick charge: in 20 minutes, using the same socket at specific charging points.

- 'Quickdrop' system: three minutes at a rapid battery exchange station.

Range optimisation is the greatest challenge for electric vehicles. This is why Renault is working hard to make the process as simple and efficient as possible by planning for all types of charging needs and methods.

2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 Gets Priced at $89,725

The 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 will arrive in US showrooms right on the heels of its North American debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

The one-of-a-kind Sports Active Coupe featuring two-model hybrid technology will be available beginning December 5, 2009 with a base MSRP of $89,725, including destination and handling.

In addition to BMW’s interpretation of two-mode hybrid technology, mated to the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 the price includes a number of standard features which are optional on the X6 xDrive50i.

These include a unique 7-speed automatic transmission, Extended Nappa leather (including the dashboard and center console), 20-inch Aero Wheels with mixed-sized performance tires, Rearview camera with Top View and Head-up display.

The full list of additional standard features is included below. In addition to the very extensive list of standard equipment, there are a handful of options to tailor the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 to individual tastes. These are also listed below.

BMW M3 GTS: The M3 Track Car We Always Wanted, But Will Never Get

Yes, that's right, the BMW M3 GTS isn't going to be available to U.S. customers. BMW gave no explanation in its announcement of the stripped-down weekend racer, but it probably has to do with making the thing legal for U.S. roads.

So yes, the M3 GTS can be set up for road use, but its primary purpose is serious track work. With that in mind, BMW's Motorsport division stripped the car of its rear seats, interior trim and pansy stuff like the air conditioner and stereo. They then added a roll cage, mounts for six-point seatbelts and a titanium exhaust system. Total weight is less than 3,300 pounds according to BMW.

Less weight wasn't enough though, so the Motorsport engineers also punched the V8 out to 4.4-liters. They say it makes around 450 horsepower now. Sadly, a double-clutch automatic will be the only transmission available although BMW says it was recalibrated for race use.

The chassis also received a round of race-oriented upgrades like adjustable dampers, fixed subframes and upgraded brakes. The front air dam and rear spoiler are also adjustable for tailoring the car's aero to different tracks.

Tokyo 2009: Mazda previews next-gen SKY clean engines, transmission and Kiyora concept

Mazda has just dropped off a bunch of info about their next-generation clean engines that will be officially unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, and we have two words for you: Direct and Diesel. Along with its next-gen 'Mazda SKY Drive' high-efficiency automatic transmissions, visitors to the at 41st Tokyo Motor Show will get to see the 'Mazda SKY-G' direct injection gas engine and the 'Mazda SKY-D' clean diesel engine. The house of Zoom-Zoom is hoping to use these advanced technologies to boost their corporate average fuel economy by a whopping 30% between 2008 and 2015.

-Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase the world premiere of its next-generation engine lineup and automatic transmissions at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show, to be held from Saturday, October 24 through Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Mazda will exhibit the 'Mazda SKY-G' direct injection gasoline engine, the 'Mazda SKY-D' clean diesel engine and the 'Mazda SKY Drive' high-efficiency automatic transmission. The Tokyo Motor Show, to be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, will also mark the Japan debut of the Kiyora concept car as an exhibit of Mazda's next-generation environmental and safety technologies.

Mazda's theme for the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show is "The Mazda SKY concept-Providing driving pleasure and environmental and safety features for all customers!" Under the headings of "Today," "Tomorrow" and "The Future," Mazda will display advanced technologies designed to improve the average fuel economy of Mazda vehicles sold globally 30 percent by 2015 compared to 2008 levels. This is one of the goals of Mazda's long-term vision for technology development, Sustainable Zoom-Zoom.

Mazda is committed to significantly improving the core aspects of its vehicles that affect performance – engines, transmissions, and lighter vehicle weight – in order to achieve elevated driving pleasure together with outstanding environmental and safety features. The Mazda SKY concept defines Mazda's approach to developing next-generation powertrains that will significantly improve the eco-friendliness and dynamic performance of all Mazda vehicles. The SKY concept embodies Mazda's desire to ensure an "everlasting blue sky" under which drivers will always be able to enjoy the fun-to-drive pleasure afforded by owning a Mazda. The Mazda Kiyora, a next-generation compact concept car imbued with Mazda's fun-to-drive character, will make its Japanese debut at the Tokyo show. Featuring the next-generation Mazda SKY concept powertrain technologies and comprehensive advancements in weight reduction, the Kiyora achieves outstanding fuel economy of 32 kilometers per liter (under Japan's 10-15 mode test cycle).

Alongside the SKY concept exhibits, Mazda will also feature a "Today's Technologies" exhibit that includes i-stop, a unique idling stop system that was introduced with the all-new Mazda Axela (known as the Mazda3 overseas). Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid
In March 2009, Mazda began leasing the Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid to Japanese government authorities and energy-related organizations. It features a unique series hybrid system, consisting of a hydrogen rotary engine connected to a generator that powers an electric motor. This advanced powertrain enables the Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid to achieve a hydrogen-fueled driving range of 200 kilometers. The vehicle also employs Mazda's plant-derived Biotechmaterials^*, reflecting initiatives to realize use of non-petroleum-based resources and reduce CO2 emissions.

*	Biotechmaterials is the collective name for plant-based materials that Mazda is developing, including bioplastic and biofabric.

Next-generation direct injection Mazda SKY-G gasoline engine
Mazda SKY-G is a next-generation direct injection gasoline engine with significantly improved fuel economy and output performance due to enhanced thermal efficiency. The engine block is newly designed to reduce mechanical friction and achieve an optimal air-fuel mix, and a direct fuel injection system is employed due to the wide variety of spray profiles that are possible, enabling the maximum expansion ratio to be achieved. Specifically, fuel economy and torque are improved by approximately 15 percent compared to Mazda's current 2.0-liter engine. This was achieved by adopting next-generation fuel injectors and a highly functional variable valve timing mechanism. The engine enables fuel economy equivalent to the current Mazda Demio (known as the Mazda2 overseas) to be achieved in a vehicle the size of a Mazda Axela (Mazda3).
Next-generation clean diesel Mazda SKY-D engine
Mazda's new SKY-D clean diesel engine boasts high fuel economy and output performance as well as low exhaust emissions. The newly designed engine block reduces mechanical friction to the level of a gasoline engine. By optimizing the pressure and temperature in the cylinders, the shape of combustion chambers, and the fuel injection rate, combustion begins at the best timing in terms of thermal efficiency. Specifically, by employing piezo injectors, a two-stage turbocharger and other technologies, fuel economy becomes approximately 20 percent better than the current 2.2-liter diesel engine. Mazda has achieved fuel economy equivalent to the current Mazda Demio (known overseas as the Mazda2) in a vehicle the size of a Mazda Atenza (Mazda6).
Next-generation Mazda SKY-Drive automatic transmission
Mazda's next-generation SKY-Drive automatic transmission is highly efficient, contributing to substantially improved fuel economy and a more direct feel compared with the current unit. It improves fuel economy by approximately five percent, due to a complete redesign that significantly reduces mechanical friction, a revised torque converter and clutch with minimized slip, and an optimized lock-up mechanism. A rapid clutch action was achieved by identifying the minimum amount of fluid necessary. This also helped to realize a direct feel similar to a dual clutch transmission.

Subaru is adding a green tint to its renowned all-wheel drive technical know-how at the Tokyo Motor Show next month

with the Hybrid Tourer Concept. Three separate power sources will share the duties of propelling this concept, depending on the specific set of circumstances.

Naturally, a horizontally-opposed "Boxer" engine – in this case displacing two liters and boasting a turbocharger and direct injection – sits under the hood and sends power to the front wheels when necessary. A Lineartronic CVT transmission is used to promote maximum fuel efficiency.

As is the case with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, an electric
motor is mated up to that gasoline engine and acts as a 10 kW motor when power is needed and a generator to recharge the lithium ion battery pack the rest of the time. A second electric motor sends 20 kW of power to the rear wheels under low-speed driving conditions and when maximum power is required. Because no driveshaft is required to connect the rear differential to the front-mounted engine, Subaru has managed to keep a flat floor for the rear occupants.

Besides the high-tech powertrain, Subaru's Hybrid Tourer Concept sports concept-appropriate touches such as giant wing-like gullwing doors that offer access for both the front- and rear-seat passengers and a dashboard that moves up and down to offer the driver a perfect view ahead. SUBARU HYBRID TOURER CONCEPT (Concept car)

1. Concept
Subaru has condensed its DNA, developed over many years around the Subaru's core technology of "Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD)" and "Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine", into the integration of a luxurious and high-quality cabin atmosphere and an eye-catching sculpted body. The concept car features Subaru's latest evolutions in handling agility, riding comfort and superior safety performance. It proposes Subaru's vision of a future grand touring car that excels in environmental friendliness thanks to Subaru's unique hybrid system.
2. Design and packaging

(1) Exterior
Subaru imagined wings with a feeling of freedom and confidence for driving far and wide in any environment. A luxurious and comfortable cabin, and advanced driving performance are contained within a sculpted aerodynamic form. The design features a combination of bright, open glass areas with a solid, reliable body.

(2) Interior
The original point of the ideal grand touring car is its interior design, featuring four independent and comfortably positioned seats. Passengers are enclosed within an atmosphere that provides a surpassing feeling of openness and stress-free reassurance, through the further pursuit of a human-centered philosophy, the essence of Subaru car design, and the incorporation of functions that are friendly to passengers.
The top of the dashboard is movable up and down to provide an optimal driving environment for the driver according to driving conditions.
A flat floor in the rear seat was achieved even with the implementation of AWD, for improved use and movement inside the cabin.
Specialized shielding is incorporated in the windshield to reduce eyestrain on the driver.
New leather covering developed with superior breathability and a ventilation function is used in the seats for improved comfort and texture.

3. Mechanisms
In addition to refinements to Subaru's core technology such as Symmetrical AWD and Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine, further enhancements were made for improved environmental friendliness, driving performance and high safety performance by offering a next-generation power unit system and advanced safety technologies.
(1) Next-generation power unit system
2.0-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline engine
The Horizontally-Opposed turbo gasoline engine, with a reputation for powerful acceleration, is combined with a direct fuel-injection system for improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, and improved torque and response in practical range. This evolution in Subaru turbo technology excels in both environmental friendliness and engine performance.

Lineartronic (CVT)
Lineartronic, Subaru's new generation automatic transmission, achieves further improvements in both fuel efficiency and driving performance by reinforcing parts for use with the high-power output of a turbo engine.

Hybrid system
To further enhance the appeal of the Symmetrical AWD system, this unique hybrid two-motor system features a power/drive motor in the front and a drive motor in the rear.

At start-up and extremely low speeds when fuel efficiency is low, such as when driving the car into a garage, the rear motor is used primarily to allow driving without utilizing the power of the engine.
During normal driving, the front engine is primarily used. The direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline mated with the Symmetrical AWD offers a whole new, Subaru driving experience.
During acceleration, the rear motor assists the driving power of the engine to achieve advanced driving performance.
Further, when accelerating uphill, the front motor, which is normally used as a power generator, assists to drive the front axle for improved performance.
The implementation of a non-idling function that stops the engine when the car comes to a halt reduces unnecessary fuel consumption.
The use of a high-performance lithium battery is based on experience and know-how achieved with the Subaru Plug-in STELLA electric vehicle, launched this summer. Mitsubishi is previewing its next generation CUV in the Land of the Rising Sun next month, and like nearly every other concept bound for the Tokyo Motor Show, the Mitsubishi PX-MiEV is packing a number of hybrid technologies to maximize fuel efficiency, decrease emissions and keep performance on par. Plus, the PX-MiEV comes with an added helping of "cocochi" – Japanese for "cozy."

PX is Mitsubishi shorthand for "plug-in hybrid crossover," so a 1.6-liter inline-four powers the front wheels, along with a generator, and a new plug-in system allows users to tap into the grid with either a 100 or 200-volt outlet. The PX-MiEV boasts an EV mode with a 30-mile range which can toggle between front- and all-wheel drive, a series hybrid mode when the juice dries up and a parallel hybrid system when under full load. Mitsu's E-4WD system shuffles power to the rear wheels when needed, using the same S-AWC and E-AYC systems as the Evolution X. The PX-MiEV can send torque left-to-right depending on the conditions, and a new center differential motor (unlike the mutli-plate clutch setup on the Evo) actively tweaks torque output to the rear wheels to increase grip.

Inside, the PX-MiEV sports a spartan interior with a number of technologies to keep occupants happy and healthy, including heat reflective glass and paint, along with individual air conditioners. Active safety systems – ranging from a "Multi-Around Monitor" to a front-facing camera that detects fatigue, then alerts the driver through a series of visual, audio and "vibrational" warnings – are sure to find their way into future Mitsubishi models. Powered by the new Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid System, which significantly extends the frequency a hybrid vehicle is driven in EV mode, the Mitsubishi Concept-PX* MiEV† returns fuel economy in excess of 50 km/litre. The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV is a new-generation concept car that balances high environmental performance with running performance by utilizing differential motors and Mitsubishi's all-new S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control), that utilises E-AYC (Electric-powered Active Yaw Control) which transfers torque to the rear left and right wheels. Other features include Mitsubishi's cocochi-interior**, which provides occupants with a comfortable cabin environment, as well as many of the latest safety technologies.

1. Design
Solid, Safe, and Simple were the keywords which drove the development of an exterior design suitable for a next-generation crossover that creates simple appearance from which all extraneous elements have been pared and that is free of the "rugged" elements typical in conventional SUVs. The headlamps and rear combination lamps use LED emitters that give the car an innovative and modern appearance as well as delivering better environmental performance with their reduced power consumption. The body uses a newly-developed metal colour that gives the car a metal shell-like appearance. Combining elements of both spoke and dish styling, the road wheel design highlights an unprecedented new look to the body as well improving brake cooling and aerodynamic performance.

The interior was designed to give an image of an airplane cockpit to improve the driver's concentration, with an instrument panel that envelops the passengers and utilises seats that keep the passengers firmly in place. In addition, the entire instrument panel and door trim utilise soft LED lighting that express the vehicle's innovation and refinement.

2. Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid System
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV's front and rear wheels are powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors and is also fitted with a 1.6L DOHC MIVEC gasoline engine which can power the front wheels as well as work as a generator. In addition, the vehicle comes with the newly-developed Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid System in which electronic circuitry automatically switches to the optimum drive mode for different driving conditions and remaining energy in the drive battery to extract maximum efficiency from the electric motors and from the gasoline engine. The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV also utilises the MiEV OS (MiEV Operating System) which selects the optimum drive mode through integrated control of the EV components and the gasoline engine as well as controls optimum electrical charge and output in response to remaining battery energy through constant monitoring of the drive battery. With these, a pleasing, safe, and comfortable ride is achieved while conserving energy. In addition, to maximise effective use of the drive battery, the vehicle is equipped with a power supply mode that allows the use of some battery power to supply domestic appliances or as an emergency power source in the event of a natural disaster.

EV mode
At low to middle vehicle speeds the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV's drive battery powers the front motor using front-wheel drive. When driving on snow, in the rain or in other low surface friction situations where maximum vehicle stability is required, the system automatically switches to four-wheel drive mode by feeding power to the rear wheel motor as well when sensors detect any front wheel slip.

Series hybrid mode
When the remaining energy in the drive battery falls to a predetermined level the system starts the gasoline engine to generate electricity and automatically switches to the series hybrid mode using the electricity generated to power the motors. In this mode as well, the system switches to four-wheel drive by driving the rear motor depending on driving conditions.

Parallel hybrid mode
At higher vehicle speeds the car is supported by the gasoline engine which operates more efficiently than the electric motors at high revolutions. In this mode, the gasoline engine also helps drive the wheels. When the driver makes sudden lane changes or other manoeuvres requiring greater vehicle stability the system switches to four-wheel drive by bringing in the rear motor to drive the rear wheels, improving stability. In addition when overtaking at higher speeds or in other situations requiring faster acceleration the system switches in both front and rear motors to provide additional power and assist the gasoline engine, providing high acceleration.

Regenerative mode
When the vehicle is slowing or coasting down a long descending slope the system switches to regenerative mode in which kinetic energy reclaimed from the wheels is stored in the drive battery.

Charging mode
As with the production i-MiEV, Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV features a 3-way battery charging system using either a 100-volt or a 200-volt domestic supply or a high-power quick-charging station. The system also incorporates a Wireless Charging Program feature that allows the owner to start charging the battery or start the air conditioner at a preset time even when away from the vehicle.

Power supply mode
As a way to maximise the usefulness of the power stored in the drive battery based on the "Smart Grid Framework," which garners attention as a link in tackling global warming, when not on the road the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV allows the owner to store electricity at night and then use that electricity via the normal charging connector to power home appliances during the daytime when domestic electricity consumption is highest. This allows the drive battery to be used as a power source in the event of a natural disaster. Should the electricity left in the battery fall below a predetermined level, the gasoline engine starts up and works as generator to maintain the power supply at a fixed level.

A 100-volt AC auxiliary socket in the rear luggage compartment also allows the electricity stored in the drive battery to be used to power cooking or lighting equipment and other appliances when camping or engaged in other leisure activities.

3. Drive system
Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV uses Mitsubishi's S-AWC integrated vehicle handling control system which is configured around an E-4WD (Electronically-powered four-wheel drive) system that controls front and rear motor output to deliver the optimum front/rear drive torque split. Under the integrated control of the S-AWC system are E-AYC (Electric-powered Active Yaw Control), which controls left/right torque split at the rear wheels and the degree of deceleration energy recovery, ASC (Active Stability Control) and ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) components.

Unlike the AYC system on the Lancer Evolution X which uses a wet multi-plate clutch arrangement, E-AYC uses a differential motor to control rear wheel torque split. The use of the differential motor makes for a high-efficiency system with outstanding response and contributes to the on-demand handling and outstanding vehicle stability that characterises the S-AWC system.

4. cocochi-interior
Some Mitsubishi Motors production cars already feature the cocochi-interior which embraces occupants in a pleasantly comfortable cabin environment developed to a "Clean, Stress-free and Safe & Reassuring" theme. For Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV the cocochi-interior brings a number of new features including: seat upholstery that deactivates allergens, breaks down VOC's (volatile organic compounds) and offensive odour molecules as well as killing bacteria; glass that shuts out UV-A radiation to protect skin from darkening and aging; and a negative-ion aroma humidifier and oxygen enricher that improve comfort and reduce fatigue. The original and the new cocochi-interior features provide a cabin atmosphere that enhances occupant comfort as well as contributing to safer operation of the vehicle.

5. Cabin heat load reducing technologies
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV uses a windshield that uses heat-reflecting glass to reduce the amount of heat energy passing through and uses IR- (infrared ray) blocking glass in the door windows. The body paint also incorporates heat-reflective and insulation technology. Inside the vehicle the four seats are individually air conditioned and cabin humidity is regulated. The adoption of these heat load reducing technologies allows efficient climate control while reducing power consumption to the absolute minimum in making for a very comfortable occupant space.

6. Latest active safety technologies
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV showcases several new active safety technologies.
The "New Multi-around Monitor" system uses cameras located at strategic points on the body to provide the driver with a combined image of the full perimeter of the vehicle. The combined image is displayed for the driver on a monitor from an overhead view for improved safety around the perimeter of the vehicle.
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV is equipped for the Driving Safety Support System (DSSS (Level II)) currently being promoted by the Japanese National Police Agency. In this advanced vehicle-infrastructure safety support system, an on-board receiver picks up signals transmitted by roadside optical beacons and the system urges the driver to take extra care when other vehicles or pedestrians have been detected by roadside sensors and cameras at intersections and pedestrian crossings.
Employing a system that uses wireless technology to ascertain the position of other vehicles and warn the driver when their proximity so requires, the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV also supports the Advanced Safety Vehicle 4 (ASV4) project being promoted by the Road Transport Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
The vehicle is also fitted with a Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC*1) system, employing the road-to-vehicle communications capabilities used in Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) to determine the position of the vehicle and whether it is parked or not.

*1 5.8 GHz band two-way wireless communication channels specifically designed for automotive use.

7. Other features
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV is fitted with electronically-controlled air suspension that gives the driver the choice of three ride height modes – Auto, High, Low – for improved stability over poor surfaces or at high speeds and for easier access to and from the vehicle.

The concept also uses a new-generation steering wheel switch and control layout that offers outstanding usability and switch visibility for safer and less stressful driving. Some of the audio, navigation, and climate control switches are located on the steering wheel so that the driver can operate them without having to take a hand off the wheel. Switch operation indicators located in the instrument panel make it quicker and easier for the driver to visually check and control the switch positions.

In the Driving Monitor System a camera mounted facing the driver monitors eye movements to determine their level of alertness. If the system detects a decrease in their concentration it issues not only audible but visual and vibrational warnings and also emits a distinctive fragrance to alert him/her to the situation.

Alongside its production i-MiEV people-mover, Mitsubishi will be showing another baker's dozen of new vehicles in its display at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show next month. On display will be several production cars as well as two brand new concepts based on the i-MiEV powertrain, including the i-MiEV Cargo seen here.

Looking something like a larger, more modern Nissan S-Cargo, it's a smaller option for folks who might not need something as big as a Ford Transit Connect. Whether for small business duty or family recreation, the Cargo adds a big box of usefulness to the basic MiEV platform. And yet it's very funky, like a Citröen C15 for Mars. It's cute and functional and we can't see any good reason why Mitsu shouldn't build it. There's a rather short presser after the jump and a gallery of high-res pics for you to peruse below as well.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS LINEUP AT THE 41ST TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

Tokyo, 30th September 2009 – Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will be showing a total of 16 cars at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show in October. Among cars on display at the Mitsubishi Motor stand include two concept cars developed to a "The EV*: Its dawn and future" theme: the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV and the i-MiEV CARGO, the i-MiEV new-generation electric vehicle for which the company is currently accepting pre-orders for the start of sales to individual customers in April 2010; and 10 current production vehicles that qualify for eco-car tax incentives in Japan. 1. Design
The i-MiEV CARGO's unique styling was developed around a "joint" design concept as it links the i-MiEV's curvaceous front section with a square rear end to give the vehicle a distinctive road presence in a wide variety of situations. Inside, the clean and simple styling eliminates extraneous elements and details to improve usability and create an interior space characterised by its free-thinking design and originality.
2. Luggage compartment
Measuring 1350 mm wide by 1180 mm deep and 1100 mm high and having a flat floor, the cube-shaped luggage compartment at the rear of the vehicle allows every inch of available space to be utilised. Geely GT: Closer to Production and It Shows

SHANGHAI — Geely is planning to make as big a splash at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show as it did at last year's Beijing show. To support its ambitious plan, the automaker is planning to introduce three new brands, supported by 20 new concept and production models.

One of the most interesting is the Geely GT, an update of last year's Beijing concept of the same name. The latest version of the GT (said to stand for "Geely Tiger") features scissors-style doors and a full interior. Official-looking images of the Shanghai car have been widely circulated on the Internet in China.
The GT wears the new black-and-red-checkered shield logo of the Emgrand or Imperial (Dihao) brand, which will be used on larger, sportier and more expensive models that Geely plans to bring to market over the next few years.

Tokyo Preview: Honda Skydeck Concept

Here's another instance of Honda calling a car a concept when it's actually mere inches away from production. This is the 2011 Honda CR-Z, and it is a reborn 1983-92 Civic CRX. It goes on sale in Japan in February 2010, with the U.S. following a few months after that.

Compact and sleek, this 161-inch long coupe/three-door hatch was first shown as a real concept at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. Now two years on, the 2009 show car is "95 percent" of the real thing, according to Honda officials. The final, final production version will be unveiled at the 2010 Detroit Show in January.
We know that the 2011 CR-Z will be powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC inline-4 combined with Honda's IMA hybrid powertrain, tied to a 6-speed manual gearbox -- essentially the sportiest drivetrain setup the company has offered in a hybrid to date. However, we still think it's likely that Honda will broaden the appeal of the CR-Z line by offering several drivetrain options -- perhaps a price-leader base model with just the 1.5-liter gas engine and perhaps, perhaps a CR-Z Si with a slightly larger, revvier engine.

The CR-Z's busy, compact 2+2 cabin is now virtually production ready and it's believed the car's Ni-Mh battery pack lies beneath the rear floor, as per the Honda Insight, on which it's is based. Even the wheels on this "concept" look production-spec, and if the "lack" of exhaust pipes on the CR-Z gives you pause, just have a look at the tail of a production Insight -- the pipes are concealed on that car, too.

Chrysler Announces New Ram Brand; Reorganizes Executives

Chrysler has formally announced what has been rumored for weeks. The Dodge brand has been split into two. It will now consist of the Dodge Ram truck brand and the Dodge car brand each with its own CEO. Well known designer Ralph Gilles takes over as the head of the Dodge car brand while Chrysler marketing executive Fred Diaz Jr. will head up the Dodge truck brand. The former head of Dodge Mike Accavitti resigned.

There were also a few other executive changes announced today. Oliver Francois is the new CEO of the Chrysler brand replacing Peter Fong. Francois currently heads up Fiat's Lancia brand in Europe and will retain that position along with worldwide responsibility for Dodge and Chrysler marketing. And finally, Joeseph Veltri, a long-time marketing executive has been named head of product planning.

2010 Dodge Caliber

Details on the 2010 Dodge Caliber came out today, and the big news, if you care to call it that, is that the 285-hp Caliber SRT-4 is no longer part of the lineup. We're not too broken up about it, really, as this pudgy, front-drive, turbocharged hatchback was no fun on a back road.

Probably the biggest changes you'd notice on the 2010 Calibers, if you were going to buy one, are the slight upgrades to the interior. There's soft vinyl on the doors and console now, plus some brightwork around the console and center stack to distract your eyes from the expanses of gray plastic

For Europe, there's some more interesting news: a new 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder. Rated at 161 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, and equipped with dual balance shafts, the CRD (Common Rail Diesel) engine should be enough to move European Caliber sales into the triple digits.

The direct-injection fuel system squirts fuel into the combustion chambers at up to 26,100 psi (1,800 bar), according to Chrysler. Emissions measures include cooled EGR and a particulate filter.

2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty

Although we've seen it in spy video, Ford officially unveiled the 2011 F-Series Super Duty at the Texas State Fair over the weekend. The basic foundation of Ford's heavy-duty pickups is unchanged, Contributor Mark Williams reports, but the importance of the new in-house-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 can't be overstated. As we've reported previously, the Power Stroke will carry ratings of 400 hp and 725 lb-ft of torque, making it the only legitimate engine choice for those planning to tow with the Super Duty.

The base engine in the Super Duty line is a 6.2-liter gasoline V8. Ford hasn't disclosed ratings, yet, but we hear it will be more potent than the current 6.8-liter V10 (362 hp, 457 lb-ft). Compared to the advanced Power Stroke, with its compacted graphite iron block and dual-compressor wheel turbo, the gas SOHC V8 is fairly conventional with an iron block and 2 valves per cylinder.

Both V8s will be paired up with a new six-speed automatic transmission with a tow/haul mode. Ford won't offer a manual transmission option this time around.

BMW doesn't really do flights of fancy, so upon seeing the company's Vision EfficientDynamics concept with our own eyes at the Frankfurt Auto Show, we knew all these strange curves had to be leading up to something very interesting and production-ready. Today, we got an answer in the form of the 2012 BMW M1.

It's an interesting time for BMW to revive the M1 nameplate (last heard from in 1981), as Mercedes-Benz is readying the reborn gullwing, the 2010 SLS AMG. And coincidentally enough, Benz is working on an electric version of the SLS that would use four electric motors and two transmissions to achieve a 3.8-second 0-to-60-mph time and a 150-mph top speed.

In contrast to the all-electric SLS and the R8-inspired Audi E-tron, the BMW M1 will be a plug-in hybrid. Drivetrain components will apparently come straight out of the EfficientDynamics concept, which had a "mid-mounted" 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel despite a 2+2 seating arrangement.

The concept also had two electric motors -- one packaged between the diesel inline-3 and a rear transaxle version of BMW's M DCT dual-clutch gearbox, and the other up front driving the front wheels through a single-speed gearbox. Ninety-eight lithium polymer cells provide the power for the electric motors. Peak output of all power sources, according to BMW, would be 356 hp, along with 590 pound-feet of torque.

Though everything's preliminary at this point, the M1 would evidently be a little slower than Benz's SLS Electric, as BMW claims a 4.8-second 0-60, along with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
Look for aerodynamics to play a huge role on the 2012 M1, as BMW is likely to apply many of the lessons it has learned Formula One racing. Various ducts and folds in the bodywork will be used to smooth air flow and create downforce. If BMW can do all this and come up with a car that looks as stunning as the original Giugiaro-penned M1, that would really be a feat of design.

Audi R8 V10

There is a button on the R8's console with a picture of a shock absorber on it. Press it and the R8's magnetically-adjustable dampers go into sport mode. After thousands of miles behind the wheel, we have found little use for it.

We have no doubt that it actually does something, but given the R8's capabilities in "normal" mode, there doesn't seem like much of a need for more aggressive damper settings. The few times we tried it, the R8 just felt more nervous and less comfortable. Small bumps felt like large ones and the few degrees of body roll that exist became less obvious.

But like all adjustable systems, there isn't a need for them if the original suspension tune feels right to begin with. Sure, manual adjustment can push the parameters more aggressively in one direction or another, but it hardly seems worth the effort. Just get it right the first time and no one will wish for more.

Audi President Says E-tron Concept Will Go Into Production

Autoweek is reporting that Johan de Nysschen, President of Audi of America, has confirmed that the E-Tron concept shown in Frankfurt is headed for production. According to the report, de Nysschen said he expects to see working prototypes on the road within two years.

The Audi E-Tron is essentially a shrunken R8 with an all-electric drivetrain. The four motors reportedly develop 3,319 pound-feet of torque. Should make for an interesting sports car.

On a bad day, car criticism is about finding faults with the very things car critics enjoy. You are invited to watch the dreary, bloodless business of marking demerits on a new car's record for shoddy switchgear, insufficient verve or...whatever.

Today, friends, is not that day.

Today, we consider the 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI (yes, that's the one with the V10), a car so well conceived and executed that we haven't the slightest interest in quibbling or equivocating.
This is a great car.

The Particulars and Caveats
We will not pretend in this particular tale that we weren't swayed by Audi's offer to let us do whatever we damn well pleased with its $164,050 worth of carbon fiber and aluminum on a roughly 2,000-mile road trip. That one company representative actually laughed heartily when we told him we'd unintentionally vaporized a not-small hare on a nighttime run on a lonely Nevada highway with the company's car might also have had some sway with us.

Indeed, it wasn't the R8 V10's performance during our few giddy laps of Infineon Raceway that impressed us most, although on that treacherous road course it impressed mightily and scared us in roughly equal measure. Neither the 525-horsepower midengine missile's performance on a steamy evening at the Sacramento Raceway Park drag strip nor its impressive numbers on our own test track sold us on the R8 V10. Though predictably, it killed there as well.

No, what impressed us most was the R8 V10's ability to turn 11.8-second quarter-mile runs while reminding us why we fell in love with manual transmissions in the first place, while impressing standers-by yet not so much that they assumed we were insufferable rich guys, and while handling with aplomb the indignities dished out by public roads and two tall guys on a long road trip.

This Ain't No NSX
It's true that an R8 V8 equipped with the identical six-speed manual could accomplish many of these same things for something on the order of $30,000 less than this V10 model. (And we love that car, too.)
What the V10 model brings is no need for excuses. With some justification, the regular R8 with its 420-hp V8 has been criticized in some quarters as staking out the same ground that the Acura NSX once did — that of the no-muss, no-fuss everyday supercar.

Implicit in that back-handed compliment is the notion that, like the Acura, the R8 V8 is a bit underpowered to truly rival comparable models from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche. The R8, in fact, lost our 2007 comparison test to the Porsche 911 Turbo for that reason. The Audi was spectacular to behold and operate, but a 12.8-second run through the quarter-mile simply would not cut it against the 480-hp Porsche.
The Numbers
The V10 version, with its additional 105 hp and 74 pound-feet of torque, needn't make any excuses. Numbers matter in this game. No pitcher wants to throw the slowest fastball in the game.
With a quarter-mile run of 11.8 seconds, the high-revving, dry-sump V10 (a variation of the same motor that powers the Audi S6 and Lamborghini Gallardo chops a full second off the R8's quarter-mile time. It also shaves seven-tenths of a second from the car's 0-60 run. It'll now do 3.7 seconds (3.5 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip).

The rest of our test results are, predictably, within the margin of testing variation compared to the previous R8s we've tested. We say predictable, because except for the engine, little of the R8's mechanical makeup has changed for the V10 model. The V10 carries the same size Pirelli summer tires (235/35R19 front, 295/30R19 rear) as the standard model. It carries the same magnetorheological two-mode adaptive dampers as the last V8 we tested. It has the same cross-drilled steel brake rotors clamped by the same eight-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

The V10 circles the skid pad with 0.97g of grip (which is between the 0.98 and 0.96 of the two V8 R8s we've tested). It stops from 60 mph in 104 feet (1 foot longer than our previous best effort in a V8 car). And a skilled driver can weave through our slalom at 70.7 mph (again, between our results from the two V8 test cars). The handling results are better than that of the Porsche Turbo we tested (again) and the braking figure is the same. It's hard to imagine the V10 wouldn't have won that comparison test against its German rival.
There are faster cars, certainly, but not many. The cheaper Corvette ZR1 is a few tenths faster through the quarter and the much cheaper Nissan GT-R is as fast through the quarter as the Audi.

The Drive
On public roads, though, there are few cars that can match the R8 V10's broad range of talents and satisfactions. We've taken up a fair amount of bytes extolling the virtues of the R8's open-gate shifter. It clicks and clacks as you move the lever through the gears in a way that is wholly satisfying to anyone with a shred of mechanical sensitivity.

That it's connected to this ripping V10 makes it all the more rewarding to work. As impressive as the numbers indicate, they don't capture the thrill of it all. With an 8,000 rpm power peak and an 8,700 rpm redline, this motor is the gift that keeps on giving. It just keeps accumulating thrust in a mad rush that ceases all conversation in the car. Or it does until you check the speedometer and say something along the lines of, "Oh, damn!" a millisecond before you back off.

And the car is utterly unflappable on any curving road you'd care to mention. Slow, tight mountain roads? No problem. The car is supernaturally nimble for its size. Open, sweeping valley roads? It is capable of such smooth, stable progress that you will be going much, much faster than a sane person would.

That all of this titillation can be contained in a car that's so comfortable over the road — so composed and so refined — is the R8 V10's true accomplishment. We don't typically subscribe to the theory that there's virtue in a car doing some things poorly and some things brilliantly. This is the flawed car-guy logic that allowed Ferrari to get through the 1970s and '80s with its reputation largely intact. At least we don't see virtue when a troubled piece of industrial design is compared to cars that do it all really, really, really well. The R8 V10 is such a car. Hell, you can even see out of the thing.

In the Details
At a starting price of $150,200, the V10-powered 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI is not cheap. For this roughly extra $30,000 compared to an R8 V8, a buyer gets not just the power but also a long list of standard equipment that should take some of the sticker shock out of the final bill.

Our test car came with an absurd amount of optional carbon-fiber trim both inside and out that was largely responsible for jacking its as-tested price to $164,050. Unless you have a fetish for the woven black stuff, you can opt out and put $8,400 back in your wallet. All of the non-trim items — high- and low-beam LED headlights, navigation system, killer Bang & Olufsen sound system and heated 10-way power seats — are standard.

Lest we forget, the R8 V10 comes with its own exterior trim package, including shiny black trim in place of flat-black trim, a splash more chrome, unique wheels, oval exhaust tips in place of the four round tips of the V8 and flared side air intakes. We could take or leave these changes from the standard car. They neither improve nor detract from the basic look of the R8. About one in 10 people that approached us during our road trip recognized this R8 as the new V10. That, it seems to us, is about right for the wildest-looking unassuming supercar you can buy.

What are we going to do, complain about the switchgear? It's all worth it.

Audi Contemplating A3 Sedan for the U.S.

A report in Automotive News says that the next-generation Audi A3 may include a sedan version for the U.S. Europe is likely to get a full range of vehicles that includes wagon, convertible and crossover variations.
Sales of the current A3 hatchback in the U.S. have been slow so far. Audi is hoping to add some incremental sales this fall with the introduction of the 2.0 TDI model.

Blame that whole aversion to hatchbacks thing for the A3's slow sales, or maybe the fact that the A3's price is so close to the A4. Either way, Audi is clearly looking to grab bigger sales numbers on the low end of the price scale. Automotive News says to expect the new A3's to show up sometime in 2012.

2009 Frankfurt Auto Show: Audi R8 Spyder

We already posted pictures of the Audi R8 Spyder. To change things up a little for its big unveiling, Audi brought a bright red one to the VW Group sneak preview event tonight. We would not have believed you had you told us a week ago, but we think we might like it in brown more than red.

The soft-top convertible will be available "in time for next Spring in Germany," according to Audi. We expect it on the U.S. market not long after. Audi isn't saying yet, be we estimate the R8 Spyder will be about $1 million less expensive than the Lamborghini Reventon Roadster.

Oh, and if you're waiting for live pictures of Audi's e-Tron R8-style electric concept car, you'll have to wait until tomorrow. Audi chose to not show it at tonight's event.

New Bentley Flagship

Bentley has released this teaser image of its new flagship due this summer. A replacement for the ancient Arnage, this vehicle will slot above the Continental series in Bentley's lineup.

That's about all those crafty Brits were willing to say at this point, so we'll have to wait another month or so to get full details.

FWD 2010 Acura RDX Available

The new front-wheel-drive 2010 Acura RDX will go on sale tomorrow.

Pricing starts at $32,520, and fuel economy is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 24 when cruising the highway. The RDX gets a standard 240-horsepower 2.3-liter inline-4 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. We'll see if its "distinct" grille from the Acura parts bin grows on people. It's doubtful.

Acura TSX V6 To Add AWD?

The 2010 Acura TSX V6 is really an American car. It's so American that it works better with a 3.5-liter V6 engine than it does with its 2.4-liter inline-4, which is kind of a surprise for a car that comes from Honda by way of its premium car division.

Yet the addition of the V6 seems to make a huge difference in the TSX, a makeover both mechanical and conceptual for this sport sedan, which has seemed kind of underwhelming since the 2009 Acura TSX with its inline-4 engine first came to us late last year.

No Japanese company has worked as hard as Honda to make itself over as an American outfit. Honda has lots of assembly factories in the U.S. just like every other Japanese-label company, but a huge part of the company's engineering brain trust is here as well. You'll find most of it in Ohio, which Soichiro Honda himself picked as the site of his American industrial base because of the profound respect he had for the quality of the American machine tools he bought from the region for his little motorcycle company during the 1950s.
So maybe it's no surprise that the 2010 Acura TSX V6 is the most American of the cars from Honda.

Everything Is Bigger in America
As we've learned, the second-generation TSX is not like the first-generation car, which was an Accord that had been shrink-wrapped to a sporting size for the European market. The TSX's roots still are in the Accord, but it's the new-generation Accord, which is far more of a full-size sedan meant for rolling across those amber waves of grain on the American highway.

Of course, a lot of this is in our head, since the new TSX's wheelbase is only 1.3 inches longer than before while its overall length is just 2.8 inches longer. And yet there's something that seems oversize about this new TSX when we catch sight of it out of the corner of our eye. There are some benefits, though, as the 2010 Acura TSX suits not just a full-size country but also full-size people, measuring out to 94.5 cubic feet of passenger volume.

If you are looking for an ideal-size car for everyday driving on the American road, this would be it. And although the cues of Acura's Keen Edge styling vocabulary continue to strike us as faintly disagreeable, the overall effect here is fairly pleasant — modern without being memorable. You know, like an American car.

How About a Little Zip?
Though the premise of the TSX has rested upon a small-displacement inline-4 that asked for the courage to challenge the redline if you wanted peak performance, this same personality has limited the car's appeal to Americans. And now that the TSX has reached full-size dimensions, the 201-horsepower 2.4-liter Honda inline-4 feels like it's overmatched, droning unpleasantly even as it gives the new TSX marginally faster performance than the old one

. This four-cylinder engine works fine, but it isn't leading a happy life.
So no one should be surprised that the addition of the 3.5-liter Acura V6 wakes the TSX right up. With 280 hp on tap at just 6,200 rpm, this engine isn't going to excite many Honda enthusiasts. Yet the V6's 254 pound-feet of torque is enough to pull the fairly prosaic, wide-ratio five-speed automatic transmission (it's a fuel economy thing, of course) with surprising authority.

At the test track, this translates to acceleration to 60 mph from a standstill in 6.4 seconds (6.1 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip) with hardly a whiff of wheelspin from the front tires even when the stability control has been disengaged. The quarter-mile arrives in 14.7 seconds at 96.6 mph.
None of this gets your attention until you find yourself on a road where you'd never take rear-seat passengers unless you were planning a focus group for evaluating the cause and affect of carsickness. Then you'll discover a razor-sharp character in this V6 that makes it a total delight while you're using the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

A tall 11.2:1 compression ratio, variable valve timing and a sophisticated throttle map account for a lot of the V6's goodness, and the typical light-flywheel effect of a Honda-engineered motor also makes a difference, as this V6 climbs the rpm scale with fairly thrilling quickness. Moreover, the transmission lets you hold a gear to redline while in Sport mode, and it doesn't get confused and default to automatic mode if it thinks you're not paying attention.

Playland at the Beach
Probably this infatuation with power accounted for our foolish overconfidence as we crested the Santa Monica Mountains on Stunt Road and looked down the narrow, twisting chute of Latigo Canyon Road as it fell toward the beach in Malibu. As with every roller-coaster ride, we came to our senses just a few seconds too late as we headed irrevocably down the first steep pitch.

Had we been in the standard 2010 Acura TSX with its inline-4, it might have been a potentially disastrous ride, as that iteration of the TSX feels clumsy and uncertain in situations like this. In comparison, the TSX V6 feels transformed, as if it had morphed into the last-generation Acura TL (you remember, the good-looking one), which it resembles in size. The TSX V6 carves up the corners while remaining poised on its suspension, feeling lively without being out of control. It's adept, if not exactly a hard-core sport sedan.

You don't quite see this potential when it comes to our usual handling tests, as the TSX V6 registers just 0.84g on the skid pad, the slalom passes in 65.1 mph and it takes 133 feet to bring it to a halt from 60 mph. Yet the overall effect of the chassis changes for the TSX V6 adds up to more than the sum of the parts. First, the 235/45R18 Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 all-season tires make up in handling balance what they lack in overall grip. Then the slightly more aggressive rates for the springs and dampers plus a fractionally stiffer front antiroll bar (meant to compensate for the V6 car's added 200 pounds over the TSX four-cylinder) all manage to keep the suspension from plunging to its bumpstops in the corners.

Even the recalibrated electric-assist power steering isn't too bad, providing accurate action and furnishing a reassuring amount of effort even though it's not exactly talkative about what's happening to the tires. And we even managed to keep the TSX V6's brakes from catching on fire — always a possibility when you're going downhill on Latigo Canyon Road.

Motoring in the American Way
The 2010 Acura TSX V6 has its American car thing pretty together on the highway. It's pretty comfortable, pretty composed and pretty undemanding. Yet like the TSX four-cylinder, it has a peculiar mix of soggy damping at low speeds that lets the car bob and weave more than it should, while the suspension calibration at freeway speed feels too lively, as if someone had put 80 psi of air in the tires. The TSX V6's added weight over the four-cylinder settles the car a bit, but the chassis still seems slightly unfinished, as if someone had sent its ride-and-handling engineers into exile before the job was done. Plenty of road noise doesn't help things, either.

So probably it's a good thing that the interior of the TSX is such a fine place to be. Even as its premium-label competition tries hard to bring more style to the interior of their cars, Acura continues to make a stronger statement with simple, strong function. The Honda-style format for the driving position continues to give you a comfortable sense of control enhanced by great visibility, and the TSX's seats are just terrific. We've come to like the layout of the center stack controls, while the voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic information continues to set the standard for intuitive use. And the DVD-audio capability of the ELS audio system puts a lot of fancier labels to shame.

American Acura
The 2010 Acura TSX V6 will make up about 20 percent of the TSX mix, and Honda says that since most TSX buyers live in urban areas, there's no demand for a manual-transmission option. And since the TSX V6 seems suited to an everyday life on the American road, we'd have to agree. It's a nice car, and it comes from the Acura division's urgent need to expand its American audience, as its Euro-theme cars like the previous-generation TSX have been greeted with deafening indifference.

Yet this change in the character of the Acura TSX comes just as the changing economy is making all of us appreciate the traditional Honda-style values of the Acura brand — efficiency, practicality and affordability. The TSX seems one bounce behind current events, more American just as European values gain greater currency. It's bigger, fancier and more comfortable just when smaller, smarter and more personal is what we want. It should be the Acura TSX — not the Audi A4 — that makes a four-cylinder sedan seem like the best car in the world.
When Honda and Acura vehicles were first introduced, the hope was that they would change American car buyers. With the introduction of the V6-powered TSX, it looks as if Americans have instead changed Honda.

Revealed: 2010 Acura ZDX

These are the first official pictures of the 2010 Acura ZDX crossover, a vehicle you might remember from the 2009 New York Auto Show where it appeared as a concept.
As you can see, not much has changed. Acura calls its styling "provocative" and "segment bending," both of which would be true if BMW hadn't already introduced its X6.

Still, it's a big step for Acura, as the ZDX is essentially a vehicle that will largely rely on its styling to entice buyers more so than sheer practicality or value. Not that it won't have plenty of either, as the ZDX gets essentially the same drivetrain and interior as the new TL sedan.

That means a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 and Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) along with a well-trimmed interior stocked with the latest technology. Sales begin later this year.

2009 Geneva Auto Show: Citroen DS Inside Concept Photos Released

Reports surfaced earlier this week that Citroen was planning a new line of near-luxury cars with the iconic DS nameplate . Late yesterday the company released a bunch of photos of the Citroen DS Inside concept, which will be in its booth at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show .�

The DS Inside is about the size of a Mini Cooper Clubman and it's a prologue to�the Citroen DS3 production car. Larger DS4 and DS5 models will follow.

We've gathered the photos of the Citroen DS Inside here and there's no denying it looks cool, provided you like the recent crop of short, squat hatchbacks (anything from the Mini family, Fiat 500, Kia Soul) and provided you like cars that look French. We're not sure about the contrasting roof, though, as it makes Citroen's cribbing from the Mini Cooper look a bit too obvious.

Ford small car Figo is here!

India's role as an important player in the future of Ford Motor Company's international strategy was underscored on Wednesday when the company's President and CEO Alan Mulally unveiled an all-new small car targetting the Indian car market: the Ford Figo.
The Ford Figo signals Ford's intention to compete in India's largest and most important small car market segment.

However, Ford has not revealed the price of the car yet.
"Our plan for India involves accelerating development of fuel efficient small cars. The small car market in India will double in the next one decade. We know the high importance placed by Indian customers on value for money," Ford Motor Company president and CEO Alan Mulally said in New Delhi

"Our exciting new Ford Figo shows how serious we are about India. It reflects our commitment to compete with great products in all segments of this car market. We are confident the Ford Figo will be a product that Indian consumers really want and value," he added.

The small car--Figo--will be targeted for both domestic sales and exports, he added.
Ford Figo is the result of a significant Ford investment commitment to expand its plant near Chennai for volume production as a small-car centre of excellence regionally.

Ford's $500 million investment has doubled the plant's production capacity to 200,000 units per year and introduces major advances in high-quality automation and innovative, eco-friendly production techniques.
Ford Figo is designed and engineered to compete in India's small car segment, which accounts for more than 70 percent of the new vehicle market.

It leverages Ford's small-car platform architecture, sharing underlying technology with the Ford Fiesta already familiar to Indian drivers.

Chevrolet Cruze: First Drive

With such focus on style, GM didn't just stop at the front. When viewed from the side, the sporty overtone carries over for the car has a nicely curved roofline that merges well with the rather steeply raked rear windscreen. It's a rather European look and feel that this car possesses, except from the rear. The rear of the Cruze screams 'Honda Civic'. Literally, the rear lights just look like inverted Civic lights a fact that was confirmed by onlookers who asked me if I happen to be driving the new Civic. Of course they were completely oblivious to the bow-tie on the rear, but it does prove my point.
Nevertheless, the Cruze oozes with style and complimenting the entire package are the nice large 16 inch alloys wrapped in tubeless 205/60 JK Vectra rubber. To sum the exterior styling, I would say the Cruze is a combination of American Muscle Car and European Sedan with a dash of Japanese essence thrown in! What you get is a marriage of parts that work to give you a stunning car that would even look good in racing stripes.

Getting into the Cruze is also an experience for you don't need the keys to open the door! That's right, the Cruze comes with sensors on the door, so just as long as you have the keys in your pocket the door will pop right open when you pull on the handle. While on the subject of doors, it is rather simple to lock as well, for all you have to do is give the handle a gentle pull and the doors will lock. Anyways, back to the interiors of the car.
Once inside you will notice the sporty-muscle tone carried over here as well. It's a bit too much plastic at parts and the fit and finish could have been better but the overall look is rather striking for you almost feel as though you are in a cockpit. The large steering wheel with cruise control and stereo controls has a nice feel to it, the dials boast of a three-pod look that might have come straight out of a classic Chevy car-chrome and all! The center console however had me thinking 'Transformers'. Starting from the LED display to the controls of the in dash stereo and CD player down to the controls for the A/C and climate control and flanked by the center two A/C vents on the dash, the entire look was rather like the Transformers logo- a good thing considering the fact that GM is the official provider of cars for the Transformers movie franchise!

GM could have really done wonders with the interiors for they are well designed, its just that they are poorly put together at places. Apart from the plastic cubby holes in the doors the one little box on top of the dashboard spoils the party for it just doesn't sit right and has gaping gaps when shut. Another element that caught my eye as tacky was the sunglass holder. Placed uniquely towards the right side of the driver's head, the quality of the holder was really sub standard.
In terms of space, the Cruze is rather decent and offers ample room for the front passengers. Rear passengers also get enough leg room however head room is at a premium thanks to the steeply raked rear glass and downward flowing roofline.
A neat yet rather awesome surprise is thrown at you when you want to get the car moving. There is no key hole for the ignition! Instead you get a rather neat start/stop button towards the left of the steering column on the dash. A gentle push of the button, provided you have the clutch pressed and the 2.0 VCDi Diesel engine roars to life. Porsche launches the Panamera in India

Porsche has finally launched its much awaited 4-door Panamera in India today. Porsche's first ever 4-door GT sportscar is all set to go head to head Mercedes-Benz S class, the BMW 7-series and the Audi A8. Designed to seat four people in absolute luxury and at the same time, feel at home on any race track the Panamera aims to offer the best combination of sporty driving and luxurious touring.

Porsche has maintained its trademark styling with this four-seater car. The unmistakable headlamp shape and arrangement, along with the typical 911-style curvaceous tail is all present on this car. Porsche however has broken away from their tried-and-tested rear/mid-engine layout that we've seen on their sports cars for so many years, and have instead opted for a front-engine configuration similar to their Cayenne SUV.

The Panamera has been launched in three variants. The Panamera S with a 4.8 litre V8 and 400 PS, which retails for Rs. 1.44 crore, the Panamera 4S with active all-wheel drive at Rs. 1.49 crore and the top of the line Panamera Turbo with a 4.8 litre twin-turbo V8 with all of 500 PS on tap and costing a whopping Rs. 2.05 crore. 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec

What's special about it?
Rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual transmission, 210 horses from a turbocharged four-cylinder, Brembo brakes and a limited-slip differential — and it's only $23,750.
If you don't see the appeal of these features and this price, then you aren't the target buyer for the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec.

Hyundai was looking to attract the biggest group of enthusiasts it could with this version of the Genesis, so it started with the base model, stripped out a few standard features to reduce costs and save weight, then added in some of the performance hardware from the top-of-the-line V6 model.
So choosing the R-Spec means no Bluetooth, cruise control or steering-wheel audio controls. Hyundai also deleted the chrome interior trim and onboard trip computer.

Once that cost was taken out, features like 19-inch alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A summer performance tires (225/40R19 front, 245/40R19 rear) could be added back in. The R-Spec also gets a sport suspension with retuned springs and dampers along with front (25mm) and rear (22mm) sway bars and a strut tower brace.

The upgraded Brembo brakes feature four-piston fixed calipers at each wheel, and the ventilated rotors measure 13.4 inches in front and 13 inches in back. The limited-slip differential is a Torsen unit if you care to know.

Hyundai didn't strip every feature out of this Genesis coupe. You still get basic stuff like power windows, keyless entry and air-conditioning. There's a six-speaker audio system with a dedicated iPod hookup and leather-wrapped steering wheel, too.

2010 Ford Taurus SHO

What's special about it?
It's been 20 years since the first Taurus SHO won over enthusiasts starved for an American performance sedan.

With a sassy-looking new Taurus launching for 2010, Ford thought it was time to revisit one of the bright spots in its recent sedan history and relaunch the high-performance version of the big four-door.
The good news: This new version does not have a dinner platter affixed to its trunk lid like the catfish-shape '96 SHO did. The bad news: Well, there's no manual transmission option as there was for the first two generations of the SHO.

But in place of the four-speed automatic that soiled the third-generation SHO, the 2010 model uses a sophisticated six-speed automatic, which can be shifted manually via steering column-mounted paddles and will even give a little goose to the throttle on downshifts.

This tranny is bolted to — wait for it — a twin-turbo, direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 that makes 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. The engine wears Ford's EcoBoost badge and is a slightly juiced version of the engine that will be available in the Lincoln MKS and MKT this year. Not coincidentally, one platform underpins all three vehicles (as well as the Ford Flex).

For the first time in the SHO's history, the 2010 model will come standard with all-wheel drive, the same Haldex system that will be optional on the standard Taurus. Ford expects this setup to deliver 25 mpg on the highway. Incidentally, the dual exhaust is a true dual, unlike the standard Taurus exhaust, which Ford refers to as "quasi-dual."
Naturally, Ford has toughened up the SHO's suspension with stiffer springs, stiffer antiroll bars and new shocks.

If that doesn't sound like enough performance for you, Ford will offer option 12S Performance package for about $995. The package brings upgraded brake pads, a more responsive tune for the electric power-assist steering, a Sport mode for the stability control system and a 3.16:1 final drive in place of the standard 2.77:1. The 12S package also brings Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tires mounted on painted 20-inch wheels.
The exterior getup is pretty restrained, as the SHO always has been. There's a small SHO badge just behind the rear side windows. Ford has also bolted on a trunk lid spoiler, of course. And the standard Taurus front grille gets a new finish. Inside the new Taurus are unique leather-covered sport seats with synthetic suede inserts made from recycled soda bottles. The SHO also has aluminum trim for the instrument and door panels.
Because the company considers this the flagship of the Ford brand, it's offered with all of the electronic goodies available, including keyless entry and push-button start, rearview camera, adaptive cruise control with collision warning and blind spot detection system.

At $37,995, the SHO will start at $6,000 more than the Taurus Limited model. It'll be in dealerships this summer

2009 Chicago Auto Show: 2010 Kia Forte

CHICAGO — Kia is introducing its 2010 Forte compact sedan at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show this week. The vehicle will hit U.S. dealerships by early summer.

Available in three trim levels — LX, EX and SX — the LX and EX take power from a 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder equipped with CVVT that makes 156 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque. The Korean automaker is offering a Fuel Economy Package that includes Motor Drive Power Steering and low-rolling-resistance tires, resulting in fuel economy of 36 mpg on the highway. The sportier SX features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission that makes 173 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque.

All three variants have an aggressive design that features swept-back headlights and an athletic stance. The SX trim gets 17-inch alloys and a rear spoiler to help further that sporty look.

Inside, the Forte has 96.8 cubic feet of passenger volume and 14.7 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. EX and SX models get power windows and door locks, keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control and optional sunroof and leather-trimmed seats. A telescoping steering column and sport seats with red stitching are also standard on the SX.

Kia includes a 10-year or 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five year or 100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty.

2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150

What's special about it?
We are normally skeptical about any co-branded car model. Maybe it just reminds us too much of past co-branding adventures such as the Levi's Gremlin or the Oleg Cassini AMC Matador.
But Ford and Harley-Davidson have been collaborating since 2000 and, you know, the connection makes at least some sense — American icons and so forth and so on. In that time Ford has released 14 models of these things, so somebody must be buying them.

At the 2009 Chicago Auto Show, Ford unveils the 2010 version, which is exactly as big and shiny and leathery as you might imagine it would be. The 2010 comes with a unique front grille, which Ford describes as billetlike. It comes with enormous, polished, forged-aluminum 22-inch wheels. Ford says that the addition of the standard deployable running boards gives the truck a lowered appearance.

And naturally the H-D model comes with a whole mess of Harley badges. The truck comes in black (of course) and Lava — a deep, brooding three-color metal-flake paint.

Handmade cloisonné badges are mounted to the seats and console lid. The seats are made to look like a biker jacket from the Harley MotorClothes apparel line. The seatbacks have ribbed leather treatments, engraved button snaps and map pockets featuring zippers from Harley jackets. Kinky!

You can have your Harley-Davidson F-150 in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations. Either way, you can only get the H-D model in the SuperCrew configuration. It's powered by the same 320-horsepower 5.4-liter V8 that's available in the standard F-150.

Road Tests 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata First Drive

Let's bring the 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata onto the stage with a round of applause, shall we?
Some 855,000 examples of the MX-5 Miata have streamed out of Mazda's factory in Japan since the first 1990 model hit the ground in late 1989. In fact, this convertible roadster has a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most popular sports car ever built.

The MX-5 lifted the idea of the lightweight roadster out of obscurity and placed it back on the wish list of car enthusiasts around the world. It single-handedly proved that lightweight sports cars were cool once again, and from this epiphany has come a long list of cars that partake in the Miata's spirit if not its form, like the Audi TT, BMW Z3/Z4, Fiat Barchetta, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Pontiac Solstice, Porsche Boxster and Rover MGF.
Some 20 years on, the feisty little roadster has withstood the test of time and competition. And now just as the rest of the world is getting a glimpse of the 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata in official Mazda photography, we're on a little road in wintry Japan to actually drive it.
The Magic Comes From Lightness
The secret of the Miata's success lies in its conception. Mazda modeled its small sports car pretty frankly on the rear-wheel-drive 1962 Lotus Elan, which offered a revolutionary combination of lightness and performance even then. And no matter how much Americans and Europeans alike have longed for more passenger room and more power ever since, Mazda hasn't strayed from its original mission. The MX-5 Miata is still a lightweight, balanced and responsive roadster that delivers the very best in wind-in-the-hair driving at an affordable price.

As Takao Kijima, chief engineer of the MX-5, tells us, his team has embraced the philosophy of Jinba-ittai, the feeling of oneness between a horse and its rider that has guided the Mazda engineers from the start of development more than two decades ago.
"When I started working on the original MX-5 back in the mid-'80s," Kijima says, "we knew from the very beginning that it had to be small, as light as possible and rear-wheel drive." Getting that first-generation car off the ground was a battle, Kijima explains, as Mazda's bean counters kept emphasizing to the planners that it would be cheaper to build a car with front-wheel drive like the Honda Civic CRX.
Kijima is very aware of the impact his car has had on the sports car world. Even his down-to-earth personality can't disguise his passion about the planning team's concept of "lightweight sports." He says, "The MX-5 must remain a small, lightweight car. That's its personality." His philosophy hasn't wavered for the last quarter century. In fact, this face-lifted 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata here is the culmination of his life's work, as he's retiring from the company after 25 years.
Things Left Undone
So in honor of Mr. MX-5, the engineer who cut his teeth under Toshihiko Hirai (the boss who led the team that built the first-generation MX-5), we are going to take some poetic license and unofficially call this revision the 20th-anniversary model.
As we pulled up at Mazda's R&D facility in Yokohama, just south of Tokyo, Kijima greeted us with the keys to our test car, an RS model with a six-speed transmission. This face-lift for 2010 comes two years after the introduction of the third-generation MX-5 (known within Mazda by its engineering code, NC), which captured the Car of the Year award in Japan. And as development for the fourth-generation MX-5 is already under way, but under a new, as yet unnamed chief engineer, the 2010 model is Kijima's last effort in charge of the MX-5. "I wanted to complete everything left undone on the current model," he smiles.
As he counts the number of changes, it's clear Kijima wanted to go out in style. Mazda might call this model only a minor face-lift, but the fact is that every major component of the car has either been redesigned or tweaked. Exterior styling, interior trim and fittings, engine, suspension, transmission, even the exhaust all went under the microscope.
No More Waffling in the Corners
Walking toward the soft-top test car, you're struck by the wide, five-sided grille and the driving light nacelles, which reflect a theme adapted from Mazda's recent concept cars, notably the flowing Nagare.
The headlights are slanted upward more than before, rocker sill skirts have been integrated into the shape, the taillights protrude (it's all the rage in Japan) and a small spoiler is integrated into the trunk lid. The designers have also made the front and rear bumpers wider to redirect the flow of air away from the turbulent area around the spinning tires. As a result, the Cd has dropped 0.01 to 0.34 for the soft top and 0.32 for the hardtop.
Despite his limited budget for improvements, Kijimi really pushed the envelope with the revised car's on-road experience. He felt that the current car lacked in certain areas and he wanted to "fix them."
First he used the Bilstein dampers from the MX-5 NR-A (the racing-specification model in Japan). The increased compression damping in the rear combined with a lower roll center for the front suspension has dramatically improved cornering behavior. The new car magically absorbs that initial waffle or dip in the suspension as you turn into a corner, delivering, instead, a more progressive, precise and faster cornering arc, with less body roll.
Straight-line stability has also been enhanced, although the stiffer suspension settings generate a slight pitching motion at speed and a harsher ride overall. But on winding roads and racetracks, this new suspension setting is superb and cannot be faulted, especially when combined with these grippy 205/45R17 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A run-flat tires.
More Revs!
Next Kijima turned to the MX-5's MZR engine. The 2.0-liter power plant's 170 horsepower arrives at 7,000 rpm, not 6,700 rpm, while the redline has climbed 500 rpm to 7,500 rpm. This enables you to squeeze that little bit extra out of the 2.0-liter inline-4's top end to get the full 170 hp. You really appreciate this upgrade when you exit a corner and want every herb on tap to get a quick escape. And as someone who races an MX-5 in Japan, we'll tell you that the top-end power will be more than welcome when we come out of the hairpin bends at Tsukuba Circuit looking for a quick exit.
To enable such high-rpm punishment, Mazda fitted pistons with full-floating wristpins and a forged crankshaft, technology borrowed from the 2.5-liter MZR engine featured in the new Mazda 6. The corporate specifications sheet says power remains unchanged at 170 hp, and so does the torque rating of 140 pound-feet at 5,000 rpm. But Kijima lets on that these revisions have in fact upped power by around 3-4 hp. As a result, this new engine calibration for Japan (which has 100-octane gasoline) delivers a sprint to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, marginally quicker than the current model.
Coat a Cone With Carbon
Helping to generate such a time is a modified six-speed manual transmission. The Miata's transmission has produced nothing but accolades from driving enthusiasts, but Kijima still saw room for improvement. Now the outer cones of the triple synchros for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear wear a coating of carbon for slicker shift action, so you can drain every last rpm out of this screaming 2.0-liter.
The chief engineer also revised the MX-5's six-speed automatic, adding Active Adaptive Shift (AAS), which now allows drivers to instantly engage the manual mode while in Drive just by flicking one of the shift paddles on the steering wheel.
To complete his mission to make the MX-5 Miata's driving experience the best it can be, Kijima fitted an induction sound enhancer to the intake manifold. It picks up sound and vibration when accelerating hard and feeds a raspier sound to the cabin, making the whole experience a lot more engaging.
Overall, Kijima's tweaks take the MX-5 to the next level. The car feels more supple and in touch with the road, and when you want a bit more power, just give the sound enhancer a good old stir.
What's Next? Smaller and Lighter, Naturally
Inside the cabin, the 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata is almost unchanged except for a newly fitted auxiliary socket for your iPod, softer leatherlike trim surfaces and a fuel-economy gauge located between the tach and speedo. And for lanky 6-foot-3 drivers like yours truly, there's a new cupholder within the door pocket that doesn't foul your knees. Recaro sport seats are also optional, as are 17-inch BBS rims.
Whenever you speak with Kijima, you cannot complete more than a few sentences without him mentioning "lightweight sports." But as we inquired whether this philosophy of minimalism can survive the modern era, he replied, "Don't be surprised if the next-generation MX-5 is even smaller and lighter than this one. The market demands it and so do we."

2009 Chicago Auto Show: Subaru Builds Custom WRX STI for Travis Pastrana

CHICAGO — Subaru has built a custom 2009 Impreza WRX STI for factory rally team driver Travis Pastrana in celebration of his third Rally America National Championship. You can see the car at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show, with Pastrana himself expected to make an appearance February 14 and 15 to sign autographs.

Pastrana's new ride uses a combination of custom-made parts and accessories from both Subaru Performance Tuning and Subaru Tecnica International. To improve handling, Subaru has added an SPT front strut tower brace and SPT lower chassis brace. The stock 305-horsepower STI engine receives a performance boost from a tuned ECU and custom downpipe. An STI short-throw shifter is connected to the six-speed gearbox.

This special 2009 Subaru WRX STI also receives a custom carbon-fiber hood and rear spoiler along with a chin spoiler, mesh grille and exhaust finishers sold as STI accessories. Biggie-size BF Goodrich G-Force Super Sport A/S 275/35ZR18 tires are wrapped around 18-inch Work Evolution XD-9 wheels finished in custom satin black. PIAA high-intensity discharge headlights, mud flaps and decals complete the rally look.
The interior upholstery is done in blue Alcantara trimmed in yellow piping. Custom yellow stitching also adds accents to the steering wheel, shifter boot and brake lever boot. Carbon fiber-patterned trim adorns the dash, doors and console. The STI's very basic stock sound system has been replaced with Kicker speakers, amplifiers and a 10-inch subwoofer. Subaru has also tucked an Xbox 360 underneath the passenger seat and connected it to the Eclipse head unit.

Honda Announces CR-Z and Fit Hybrids for 2010

Honda announced plans to begin sales in Japan of the CR-Z sporty hybrid model in February 2010 and Fit Hybrid before the end of 2010.

By combining these two models with the currently available Insight Hybrid and Civic Hybrid, Honda will further enhance its lineup of compact hybrid models, which leverage the unique characteristics of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA), including compact size, lightweight and high efficiency.

In addition, Honda is currently developing a new hybrid system which is intended to be installed on mid- to large-size vehicles.

Honda also announced that, in addition to the No. 1 line at its Suzuka Factory, the production of Insight also began on Suzuka's No. 3 line in mid-June 2009, leveraging Honda's flexible production system.

In order to continue contributing to the global effort to reduce CO2 emissions, Honda will continue to focus on research and development of technologies which improve fuel-efficiency and strive to deliver products with improved environmental performance to as many customers as possible by making such products more accessible to all people.

Mercedes-Benz Announces S 400 HYBRID

Mercedes-Benz said that its new S-class hybrid, the S 400 HYBRID will be the world's first series production hybrid to feature a hybrid drive system with a lithium-ion battery.

Mercedes-Benz is emphatically underlining its claim to leadership with respect to design, comfort, innovation and environmental compatibility. The combination of a further improved V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes this model the world's most efficient luxury saloon with a petrol engine.

Its fuel consumption of 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers (30 mpg U.S.) (NEDC combined) corresponds to carbon dioxide emissions of 186 grams per kilometer. The combined output is 220 kW/299 hp, with a combined maximum torque of 385 Newton meters. The S 400 HYBRID accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of around 250 km/h - environmentally compatible drive systems and outstanding performance are not necessarily a contradiction in terms.

The S-Class hybrid offers all the advantages of this drive concept: a comfortable ECO start/stop function automatically switches the engine off when the S-Class comes to a stop - for example at traffic lights. During deceleration, kinetic energy is recuperated and stored by the compact lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment. This energy is put to use when required, for example when accelerating.

During the environmental certification process for the S-Class, more than 40,000 individual processes were examined, analyzed and evaluated to produce a comprehensive eco-profile.

High level of environmental compatibility over the full lifecycle

For the comparative assessment forming part of the environmental certification process, the S 400 HYBRID with a combined output of 220 kW (299 hp) was compared to the 200 kW (272 hp) S 350 petrol model. Even the conventionally powered S 350 impresses with good fuel consumption figures for this vehicle class: only 10.0 to 10.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers - depending on the tires. This excellent figure is easily bettered by the S 400 HYBRID, which consumes just 7.9 to 8.1 l/100km. This corresponds to a remarkable 21-percent reduction. The S-Class with hybrid technology also achieves top figures when it comes to CO2emissions, which are between 186 and 189 g/km.

Taking the entire lifecycle into consideration, namely production, operation for 300,000 kilometers and recycling/disposal, the S 400 HYBRID produces 18 percent lower CO2emissions than the comparative model. This saving per vehicle corresponds to roughly 1.6 times the annual per capita emissions of the average European. The lower requirement for energy resources caused by the lower fuel consumption during the operating phase leads to a 17-percent reduction in the primary energy requirement. This corresponds to the energy content of around 7000 liters of petrol.

Lithium-ion battery integrated into the recycling process
In the case of the S 400 HYBRID the recycling concept was produced in parallel with development of the vehicle, with the individual components and materials being analyzed during every stage of the process. Aspects given close attention included the segregation and ease of disassembly of certain thermoplastic components such as bumpers and wheel arch, side member, underbody and engine compartment claddings, with a view to easy recycling.

This first use of a lithium-ion battery in a series production car also presented new challenges with respect to eventual disposal and recycling. In collaboration with suppliers and disposal specialists, innovative recycling concepts were developed which enable the valuable material constituents to be retrieved. All in all, it was possible to show a high material recycling rate of 85 percent, and an overall recycling rate of 95 percent. This means that the S-Class already complies with the overall recycling requirement coming into force from 1 January 2015.

Use of recycled components and renewable raw materials
A number of recycled parts and renewable natural materials are used in the production of the S-Class. All in all, 45 S-Class components such as wiring ducts or underbody panels with a total weight of 21.2 kilograms are made from recycled, high-quality plastics. Another aim was to obtain recycled materials from vehicle-related waste flows as far as possible, so as to create closed loops. Example: the recycled material used for the front wheel arches consists of reprocessed vehicle components such as the housings of starter batteries and bumper claddings from the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System, as well as waste material from cockpit production.

In the S-Class, 27 components with a total weight of just under 43 kilograms are produced with the use of natural materials. Wool is used in the seat upholstery, while coconut fiber and natural latex go into the driver's seat backrest for a perfect seating climate. The backrest cladding is of wood-fiber, and the attached retention points are produced directly from the waste materials during production of the cladding, thereby allowing a closed materials loop.

Further uses of renewable raw materials in the S-Class: the interior trim is enhanced with real wood veneers, and the parcel shelf lining is made from flax fibers.

The S 400 HYBRID sets new standards, not only in the fields of technology, innovation and driving pleasure. The luxury saloon offers an overall excellent environmental lifecycle assessment, with favorable fuel consumption, low emissions, a comprehensive recycling concept and a high share of renewable and recycled materials.

Frankfurt Preview: The New Volvo C70

Volvo has revealed pictures of the all-new Volvo C70 that will be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September 2009.

At its launch in early 2006, the Volvo C70 broke new ground as the world's first four seater convertible with a retractable hard top. More than three years on, the new Volvo C70 coupe/convertible is set to break new ground with a refreshed design to give the car a new look, roof up or down. The new C70 retains the three-piece retractable roof, spacious seating for four adults and class-leading convertible safety standards as the outgoing model.

The front of the new C70 takes inspiration from the S60 Concept that was unveiled in early 2009, thereby making the C70 more closely aligned with the design language of the larger cars in the Volvo range.

To offer even more road presence a dramatic Flamenco Red Pearl color has been introduced.

The rear of the car continues the front's new bold design. High-tech LED lamps, as found on the XC60, are the most noticeable addition to the rear and the entire lamp unit is now clearly integrated with the oval that frames the new C70's rear panel.

The interior has also been given a refresh to create a more comfortable and luxury feel. The instrument panel has been redesigned to give it a wider, sleeker look with improved finish. The surface of the panel has a new texture that enhances the quality feel.

To further enhance comfort levels, the seats have been upholstered in a new, softer hide offering all occupants a greater level of comfort.

Advanced engine and exhaust filtration means Volvo's engines combine high performance with low environmental impact. The Volvo C70 is available with the following petrol and diesel engines. The preliminary fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures apply to models with a manual gearbox running in the combined driving cycle.

The new Volvo C30 will make its debut in Frankfurt alongside the recently revealed C70 and S60 Concept.

The renewal of the Volvo C30 is more comprehensive than is usually the case with Volvo's models. The entire front has been redesigned, taking inspiration from the S60 concept and the C70. This gives the car a radical new appearance from the front, carving out a distinctive personality which clearly separates the new C30 from the Volvo S40 and V50.

In the middle of the front is the new, larger iron mark just as in the rest of the Volvo range. The air intake has also grown in size and resembles the intake in the XC60. The grille has a new pattern used solely on the C30.

Yet another new feature is the luggage compartment cover in the rear, which uses a new material and a new graphic pattern to further enhance the car's modern image.

New centre stack - Oyster Burst Déco

Volvo's special centre stack is already available in a range of innovative variants. Now another new option is being added, Oyster Burst Déco. Volvo's design team was inspired by the surface texture of the classic Swedish Hagström guitars that enjoyed world renown in the hands of stars such as Elvis Presley back in the 1950s. Hagström used the word "burst" in many of its model names and gave their guitars a pattern that shifted subtly from light to dark and back again. Just like in the new centre stack of the Volvo C30.

New expressive accessory styling kit

The Volvo C30 also meets the wishes of buyers with a broader car design interest. A youthful new accessory styling kit with a bolder, less polished style gives the C30 even more attitude. The kit includes foglamp décor, a front skidplate, side scuff plates with engraved C30 logo and a rear skidplate with a stylish aluminum look. For D5 and T5 two 90 mm tail pipes in polished stainless steel are added to underline the powerful engine.

DETROIT — Exterior and interior images of the redesigned 2010 Toyota Prius have been posted at Priuschat.com and subsequently snapped up around the blogosphere.

Toyota spokesman Curt McAllister on Thursday morning confirmed for Inside Line the authenticity of the images, and said they were "accidentally leaked." He added, "More details at the Detroit show."
The car's formal unveiling is slated for January at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The new Prius will face off against the Honda Insight, which was introduced last month at the Paris show and also goes on sale next year as a 2010 model. Look for the Insight to be priced from $2,000-$3,000 below the Prius.
The 2010 Prius will be fitted initially with nickel-metal-hydride batteries, but is expected to switch to lithium-ion batteries within a year or two. The car's four-cylinder gas engine is expected to get a modest bump in displacement, from 1.5 to 1.6 liters, with more power, but better fuel economy

Fisker to Show Production Karma Plug-In Hybrid at Detroit Auto Show

Fisker Automotive announced that its first production car, the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sedan, will be showcased at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) next month in Detroit.

Featuring the proprietary Q-Drive powertrain, the Fisker Karma will have an all-electric range of 50 miles (80km). After the all electric 50 miles, the gasoline engine turns a generator to charge the lithium ion battery. Once the 50-mile electric range has been exceeded, the Fisker Karma can be used as a normal hybrid vehicle.

With this balance of electric and gas range, Fisker Automotive estimates that most Karma drivers who charge the Karma overnight and commute less than 50 miles per day will be able to achieve an average fuel economy of 100 mpg (2.4L/100km).

The car also employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine from General Motors rated at 260 hp that will kick, in turn, a generator to supply energy after the battery range is exceeded. Fisker expects a top speed of 125 mph and a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.8 seconds.

The large powerful lithium ion battery provides 22.6 kWh, which has unique control software. The two powerful electric motors deliver a combined 408 hp.

Underneath the Karma is an all aluminum spaceframe made in cooperation with Norsk Hydro. The exterior body is a combination of aluminum panels and composite panels.

The Karma has a unique sustainable interior strategy. The design of the interior cabin is a luxurious tailored space for four adults. The interior will be unveiled for the first time in its final form at the 2009 NAIAS.

The exterior design of the production Karma is instantly recognizable and makes no compromises, with only minor changes from the 2008 Karma show car.

With a base price of $87,900 (USD), the Fisker Karma is scheduled to begin delivery in November 2009.

The engine in the BMW Z4 sDrive30i develops maximum output of 255 hp from 3.0 liters capacity at an engine speed of 6,600 rpm. Maximum torque of 220 lb-ft, in turn, comes at just 2,600 rpm.

The BMW Z4 sDrive30i accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds (with optional sport automatic in 6.0 seconds). Top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph (150 mph when equipped with the optional Sport Package). Average fuel consumption is 8.5/8.3 ltr/100 km (33.2/34.0 mpg) with CO2 emissions of 195 g/km.

All variants of the new BMW Z4 come as standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Developed specifically for BMW’s new Roadster, the various transmission options are particularly sporting in their character. Indeed, this is borne out in particular by extremely short gearshift travel much shorter than on all other current BMW models with a manual gearshift.

As an option, the BMW Z4 sDrive35i is available with BMW’s newly developed double-clutch sport automatic gearbox. Based on the M DCT transmission introduced in the BMW M3, this 7-speed gearbox ensures faster acceleration and extra performance in comparison with the 6-speed manual gearbox, while providing the comfort features of a BMW automatic transmission. The 7-speed double-clutch sport automatic shifts gears without the slightest interruption of power.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35i with its seven-speed sport automatic accelerates to 60mph in just 5.0 seconds, while fuel consumption is expected to outperform the fuel economy on the same model with a manual gearbox.

Boasting Dynamic Drive Control as standard, the BMW Z4 enables the driver to vary the set-up of the drivetrain and suspension at the touch of a button in three modes. BMW iDrive, in turn, is now available for the first time as an option on the BMW Roadster, the new generation of iDrive coming together with the optional Professional navigation system.

The 2009 BMW Z4 Roadster has two-piece electrohydraulically retractable hardtop in lightweight aluminum shell construction. The hardtop opens and closes fully automatically in each case within 20 seconds

The new BMW Z4 takes on the classic look of the roadster in modern, flowing lines. The car’s proportions are borne out by the long and low-slung engine compartment lid, short overhangs, the long wheelbase and large wheels as well as the low seating position near the rear axle.

The front view features a large, upright BMW kidney grille, wide air intake and the dual round headlights, typical of the BMW brand. All surfaces and lines, including the character lines on the hood, strive towards an imaginary target point on the road ahead.

The side view is dominated by the dynamic flow of the car’s shoulder line connecting the front and rear wheel arches and accentuating the stretched, athletic look of the Roadster. The horizontal orientation of the car’s lines and surfaces at the rear, in turn, emphasizes the sheer width of the new BMW Z4. Detroit Preview: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

General Motors unveiled second-generation 2010 Chevy Equinox, a compact crossover that blends distinctive design with improved fuel economy, which will have its world debut at the North American Auto Show in Detroit next month.

A new, 2.4L direct injection engine helps the Equinox deliver expected best-in-segment estimated highway fuel economy of 30 mpg – a 25-percent improvement over the previous model. Chevrolet expects nearly two-thirds of customers will choose the efficient, 2.4L engine.

The new Equinox draws its exterior design inspiration from the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover.

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox keeps the same 112.5 inch wheelbase, yet is one inch shorter and wider of the previous model.

The new Equinox will be available with navigation and a seven-inch touch-screen monitor, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity, upgraded sound systems, and a dual-screen entertainment system for backseat passengers. Also featured are a powered and programmable liftgate, rear-view camera, and an intelligent remote-start system that warms the cabin and activates the heated seats depending on outside temperature.

Safety highlights include standard electronic stability and traction control, along with front, head-curtain, and seat-mounted side airbags.

The 2010 Equinox goes on sale in mid-2009. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology.

Mercedes Reveal Details of its 2010 E-Class

As part of the Mercedes-Benz reception in Detroit in front of over 650 trade journalists from around the world, Daimler CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche presented the 2010 E class with edgy new styling and technology from its more expensive S and CL class vehicles.

Design inspiration comes from the Fascination concept, which includes the new squared-off headlamps, which replace the circular units of the current car. Flagship versions will get LED daytime running lights.

Mercedes-Benz has improved the already exemplary long-distance comfort of the E-Class even further in the new saloon, including intelligent bodyshell technology with up to 30 percent greater rigidity, further improved seats and a newly developed suspension whose shock absorbers automatically adjust to the current driving situation. The optional air suspension now works together with an electronic damping system.

The outstanding safety and comfort of the E-Class are matched by its environmental compatibility and economy: the four- and six-cylinder engines are direct-injection units, and consume up to 23 percent less fuel than before. The combined NEDC consumption of the new four-cylinder diesel engines is just 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers (44.38mpg US), which corresponds to 139 grams of CO2 per kilometer. All the engines for the new E-Cass meet the EU5 emission standard, and in the case of the E 350 BlueTEC the emissions are already below the EU6 limits planned for 2014.

The general public will get its first look at the car at the Geneva motor show in March, presumably followed by a U.S. show debut at New York in April.

The E class goes on sales in mid-summer as the E350 and E550. An all-wheel drive model, the E63 AMG performance version and the E350 BlueTec 50-state clean diesel go on sale in 2010.

A diesel hybrid, offering 55mpg and emitting less than 140g/km of CO2 will join the line-up a year or so after launch.

Detroit 2009: Cadillac Converj EV Concept

General Motors unveiled a further glimpse at the potential of electric propulsion today, this time in the form of luxury transportation, with the Cadillac Converj Concept.

The Cadillac Converj was developed as a well-appointed grand touring coupe with a bold design and a host of interactive technology.

The Converj electric concept—a new model similar to the CTS coupe although “smaller” and “bolder”—suggests that the company plans to use electric-drive technology, to be utilized in the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, in other vehicles.

The four-passenger Converj concept is intended to show how GM’s revolutionary electric propulsion technology – called Voltec – can power a luxury coupe with a typically Cadillac “no compromises” design. The technology enables up to 40 miles of gas- and emissions-free electric driving with extended-range capability of hundreds of miles.

Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman of Global Product Development, said the Converj concept has production substance. “It’s a logical extension of our plan to reinvent the automobile,” he said. “It clearly shows what a Cadillac electric vehicle could look like, and clearly indicates that global luxury customers can have a car that has both strong design and electric propulsion with a total range of hundreds of anxiety-free miles.”

Cadillac’s extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV) concept has a new body style that is an evolution of the brand’s traditional Art and Science design theme. An aggressive, forward-leaning arc profile is the foundation for the sporting stance. And more than a Cadillac in form, Converj is also intended to be a Cadillac in substance, with the premium materials, technology and driving dynamics that are hallmarks of the brand.

Voltec – innovative propulsion technology
The Cadillac Converj’s Voltec electric propulsion system is made up of a 16-kWh, T-shaped battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. It uses electricity as its primary source to drive the car.

A thermally managed battery pack contains more than 220 lithium-ion cells that provide the primary power to drive the Converj electrically up to 40 miles without using fuel or producing tailpipe emissions. The battery is integrated into the Converj’s chassis and stores electricity from the grid when the vehicle is plugged in. It takes less than three hours to recharge the battery at 240V, or about eight hours from a 120V outlet.

When the battery’s energy is low, the Converj seamlessly switches to extended-range mode. During this secondary level of operation, electricity needed to power the vehicle is created on-board by a flex-fuel-powered engine that operates much like a home generator to create electricity. The engine-generator ensures a constant supply of power for hundreds of miles until the car is refueled or plugged in to recharge the battery. This extended-range mode eliminates the range anxiety that comes with driving pure electric vehicles that offer no backup power when the battery charge is low.

Whether in electric or extended-range mode, the Converj is propelled all the time by an electric drive unit. It converts electrical energy from the battery or the engine-generator into mechanical energy to drive the front wheels. It also delivers 273 lb.-ft. (370 Nm) of instant torque, for a quick launch, and 120 kW of power. The top speed is 100 mph.

There is no compromise in vehicle performance in either mode of operation. To enhance the ride feel, the Converj also features GM’s Magnetic Ride Control; and for even greater efficiency, energy during braking is captured and stored in the battery.

Pure Cadillac design
There’s no mistaking the Converj for anything but a Cadillac, according to Lutz. “An aggressive, forward-leaning profile hints at a new, progressive theme and proportion in Cadillac’s design evolution,” he says. “The new proportion showcases a uniquely shaped, modern vision of a personal luxury 2+2.”

The overall shape is reinforced by a prominent, sweeping body line with large, 21-inch (front) and 22-inch (rear) wheels pushed to the edges of the body. The Converj exterior is painted a dark silver tri-coat that GM designers dubbed “Reaction.”

An all-glass roof incorporates solar panels that help offset power drain from the vehicle’s accessories. Additionally, several aerodynamic and design efficiencies were incorporated to enhance the driving range, including:

- A full under-vehicle cover (belly pan)
- Minimal grille openings that reduce drag at the front of the vehicle
- Low-profile rearview cameras replace conventional outside mirrors to reduce drag
- Wheels are shaped to push air outward for smoother body side airflow

The Converj also incorporates vertical headlamp and taillamp elements, with light pipe technology.

“Vertical lamps are Cadillac signatures and the Converj builds on the brand’s light pipe technology with bolder light emitting diode (LED) and high-intensity discharge elements front and rear,” said Clay Dean, global design director for Cadillac. “There is also a unique daylight light ‘spear’ at the top of the headlamps.”

Luxury meets technology inside
The Converj’s interior has advanced features and luxurious appointments blending efficiency and environmental consciousness. The 2+2 configuration is trimmed in contrasting Winter White synthetic suede – including the top of the instrument panel – and Midnight Black leather, with polished aluminum and wood grain accents. Renewable materials are used throughout such as wool-blend carpeting, a headliner made from silk, suede made from post-industrial content and more.

A technologically advanced driver center increases efficiency and reduces the draw on the battery. Features include:

- New, organic light-emitting diode technology used on reconfigurable instrument cluster
- Touch-screen navigation, climate, center-stack controls and audio systems
- Adjustable, overhead white ambient lighting
- Unique “power on” sequence featuring blue-lit console graphics
- Screen displays for features including regenerative braking, battery charge level and power output
- No inside rearview or outside mirrors; cameras provide surrounding images on a screen placed high on the instrument panel for a full, panoramic view

General Motors Shows Upcoming Cars and Crossovers at 2009 Detroit Auto Show

General Motors opened the 2009 Detroit Auto Show with a road rally of 17 new and upcoming cars and crossovers – including four global premieres – that underscores GM’s ongoing commitment to emotionally compelling design, leading fuel efficiency and advanced technology.
In addition to the four world premieres – the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, 2010 Cadillac SRX, 2010 Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac Converj concept – Chevrolet announced it will produce and bring to the U.S. the highly fuel-efficient Spark four-door mini car and seven-seat Orlando multi-purpose vehicle.

The production version of the Spark will be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show in March. Sales of Spark will begin in early 2010 in Europe, followed by other global regions. Originally seen as the Chevrolet Beat concept, the car drew nearly 2 million consumer votes asking GM to build it. Spark will hit U.S. showrooms in 2011.

Cadillac Converj concept

A production version of the Orlando show car, introduced last fall at the Paris Motor Show, will also join Chevrolet showrooms in the U.S. in 2011. The small crossover is built on the global compact-vehicle platform used for the Chevrolet Cruze. More details on GM’s global plans for Orlando will be announced in the near future.

The Cadillac Converj concept propels Cadillac’s acclaimed design into the future of luxury driving. The concept is a well-appointed grand touring coupe with a bold design, a host of interactive technologies and eco-friendly, renewable materials throughout. The four-passenger Converj concept is intended to show how GM's revolutionary Voltec electric propulsion system can meet the desires of luxury consumers.

The Cadillac concept, although based on the platform used for the Chevrolet Volt, is dramatically different-looking. It will be sold at a much higher price than the estimated $40,000 sticker on the Volt plug-in hybrid.
